Entering the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, farmers in Krong No district face adverse weather phenomena, especially cold weather that coincides with important growth cycles of crops.

At the end of the season, the weather in the area is hot and dry. This makes it difficult for many crops, especially rice, to grow.

People of Nam N'dir commune, Krong No district ( Dak Nong ) regularly visit the fields to take care of the rice fields to overcome adverse weather.

Mrs. Ly Thi Sen's family in Nam Ninh village, Nam N'dir commune, Krong No district planted more than 5 sao of rice this crop. Since the beginning of the crop, production conditions in the fields have been quite favorable, with abundant water resources and negligible pests and diseases; however, due to unfavorable weather, the rice plants have been slow to grow.

Ms. Sen said: "The cold weather coincides with important times for rice plants such as: young seedlings, leaf development, preparation for panicle formation... Sometimes the cold weather lasts so long that the rice fields seem to stop growing."

According to Mr. Dang Van Duong, Nam N'dir commune, many rice fields this year show signs of uneven flowering. There are rice fields that are forming ears but the rice flowers have not yet emerged from the neck of the flower but the pollen has already bloomed. This phenomenon can easily lead to empty grains on the rice plants.

“To prevent the rice plants from getting too cold, I have applied some common measures. Among them, I limit the use of too much fertilizer, especially nitrogen fertilizer, to avoid shocking the plants,” said Mr. Duong.

In addition, Mr. Duong also added phosphate fertilizer to help keep the soil warm and stimulate the growth of rice roots. Implementing these measures will help rice plants increase their resistance to harsh weather and ensure productivity.

Most of the rice area in Krong No has high yield in this winter-spring crop.

Besides rice, Krong No people are now harvesting winter-spring corn. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, corn yields quite well this season and sells at stable prices. This winter-spring crop, the entire district planted 1,426 hectares of corn.

Mr. Doan Gia Loc, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Krong No district, said that through the results of annual crop inspections, this year's growth and development is slower than in previous years.

The reason is that the weather is unusual, the cold temperature lasts for a long time, so the growth period of crops is also extended. This makes the winter-spring season longer than usual and affects the health of crops, increasing the risk of disease.

Many households continue to cooperate with Syngenta Vietnam Joint Stock Company to grow corn seeds with high efficiency. With a yield of 8 - 10 tons/ha, selling price of 13,000 VND/kg, corn seed growers earn an average profit of over 100 - 130 million VND/ha.

To make annual short-term crops effective, Krong No district has implemented a plan to change the crop structure, shifting some types of plants that require a lot of water to plants that use less water such as pumpkin, chili, and beans of all kinds to avoid risks in production for the people.

Along with that, the district signed a contract with the hydropower plant to operate pumping stations during important production stages. Specifically, the time of land preparation, flooding, and rice flowering are times when water is needed the most.

The late winter-spring corn fields of the people of Quang Phu commune, Krong No district (Dak Nong) are growing well thanks to abundant irrigation water.

During the above times, the district coordinated and signed agreements with the hydropower company on the area and time of water regulation. Thereby, the pumping stations all met the irrigation water source for the winter-spring crop.

“The water source is sufficient for production, but there have been times when extreme weather events have occurred. Professionals have instructed people on response and prevention measures, so the winter-spring crop has been quite favorable since the beginning of the season,” added Mr. Doan Gia Loc.

In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, Krong No district will plant 4,295 hectares of various short-term crops. Of which, rice is 1,922 hectares, corn is 1,426 hectares, beans of all kinds are 87 hectares, green vegetables are 187 hectares, sweet potatoes are 391 hectares, and pumpkins are 202 hectares.
