According to expert Ron Amedeo at Ars Technica, the OLED screen on the device was damaged in an unexplained way, suggesting that a small piece of debris likely got into the small "groove" in the inner screen between the screen protector and the bezel, and then struck the panel when the two halves of the Pixel Fold screen closed.
The Pixel Fold also experienced screen issues.

One Pixel Fold owner on Reddit also reported some small dents in the same area of the screen. Meanwhile, another Pixel Fold owner reported some unsightly peeling from the screen protector that appeared along with a scratch. The Pixel Fold reviewer on The Verge also noticed a faint scratch on the inner screen protector after only a week of use, raising certain concerns about the product.
On the r/GooglePixel forum, user marcusr_uk reported a bright pink line appearing on the inner screen of the Pixel Fold after only a few hours of use.
Commenting on reports of the incident, Google spokesperson Alex Moriconi simply said, “We advise anyone experiencing an issue to contact support for investigation.” Additionally, Google plans to allow users to attempt DIY screen repairs using iFixit's toolkit if they are technically proficient.
The Pixel Fold isn't the only foldable smartphone to experience durability issues after its launch. For example, Samsung's foldable smartphone, despite significant durability improvements over the years, has seen owners report problems with screen protectors not sticking, screen cracks at the fold point, and malfunctioning hinges.
