Case of 6 people being poisoned by alcohol: Methanol content in alcohol exceeded the threshold by more than 1,000 times

On April 9, the Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health reported the conclusion of the food poisoning case with 6 tourists in Ninh Thuan (1 person died).

According to the Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health, at 2:00 p.m. on April 1, the Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center (Tien Giang Province) made a record of verifying personal information about food poisoning at the Tan Phu Dong District People's Court (where the alcohol poisoning victims worked).

Through actual verification at court, Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center recorded a total of 12 remaining bottles (glass bottles with a volume of 500ml/bottle) produced at KT Company Limited (headquartered in Tan Ly Dong commune, Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province), production date June 9, 2024, expiry date 3 years from the date of manufacture.

Of which, 2 bottles have been opened: 1 bottle is still full, 1 bottle has been drunk about 200ml (drank on January 7, 2025, 300ml remaining); the front and back stamps are cherry wine, alcohol content 29%.

10 intact bottles, including: 4 bottles with front label saying sticky rice wine, back label saying cherry wine, alcohol content 40%; 6 bottles with 2-sided label saying cherry wine, alcohol content 29%.

On April 2, Tan Phu Dong District Medical Center coordinated with Tien Giang Food Safety and Hygiene Department to send samples for testing at Ho Chi Minh City Public Health Institute for 2 samples: KT cherry wine (29%) and KT sticky rice wine (40%).

Authorities determined: The KT cherry wine sample (29%) had a methanol content test result 1,073.05 times higher than the prescribed level.

For the KT rice wine sample (40%), the test result showed that the methanol content exceeded the allowable level by 6,092.13 times.

The Department of Health concluded that the group of tourists in Ninh Thuan suffered food poisoning due to drinking KT cherry wine with methanol content exceeding the threshold.

Previously, a group of officials from the Tan Phu Dong District People's Court (Tien Giang) organized a trip to Ninh Thuan. On the night of March 29, 8 people drank more than 6 bottles of fruit wine, each bottle about 500 ml, and all 8 showed signs of poisoning. 2 people with less serious injuries went home, 6 people were transferred to Cho Ray Hospital (1 person later died).
