On November 10, 2023, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung signed a decision to include Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao in the list of national intangible cultural heritage at the request of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and the Department of Cultural Heritage.
Vovinam recognized as national intangible cultural heritage
Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee directed the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Vovinam Federation to complete the dossier to send to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to propose recognizing Vovinam - Viet Vo Dao as a national intangible cultural heritage. This is a traditional martial art of the Vietnamese people founded by the late martial artist Nguyen Loc in 1938 in Hanoi and has been preserved, promoted and developed more and more strongly by generations of martial artists.
Vovinam - Vietnamese martial arts proposed to be recognized as intangible cultural heritage of humanity
Currently, Vovinam - Vietnamese martial arts is present in more than 70 countries and territories, contributing to introducing the image of the country and people of Vietnam to international friends. Throughout the process of formation and development, Vovinam has constantly improved so that more and more people at home and abroad can access and learn the quintessence of Vietnamese martial arts.
Vovinam has also been included in many SEA Games competitions. The most recent are two consecutive SEA Games: SEA Games 31 in Vietnam in 2022 and SEA Games 32 in Cambodia in 2023. On November 22, the 2023 Vovinam World Championship will be held in Ho Chi Minh City, attracting 35 countries and territories to compete for 44 sets of medals.
Vovinam is included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
The Vietnam Vovinam Federation is promoting the opening of the Global Vovinam Academy in Ho Chi Minh City, and is completing the application to register with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) to recognize Vovinam as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
