Huong Son District (Ha Tinh Province) is actively planting the Millennium Tree under the canopy of the primary forest. This medicinal plant not only brings high economic efficiency but also contributes significantly to the protection and development of forests, opening up a new and promising direction.
Millennium is a medicinal plant that used to grow wild in the primeval forests of Huong Son district, Ha Tinh.
It has long been exploited by indigenous people to make traditional medicine. With outstanding medicinal properties such as supporting the treatment of rheumatism, bone and joint pain, and spinal degeneration, the plant has great value in Oriental medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.

Due to uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources, the source of millennium trees in the forest is increasingly depleted. Realizing this, in 2024, Huong Son district tested a model of planting millennium trees interspersed under the canopy of primary forests.
Households in Son Kim 1 and Son Kim 2 communes have pioneered the implementation with more than 530 hectares of medicinal plants planted.
Mr. Nguyen Dang Dieu (a household participating in this model in An Su village, Son Kim 1 commune) said: "Implementing the policy of the local government, my family has intercropped the Millennium tree on over 20 hectares of primary forest. Although it does not cost much investment and care, up to now the Millennium tree has grown well, with a survival rate of nearly 90%".
The millennium tree grows well and is considered suitable for the site conditions of Huong Son mountain area (Ha Tinh).
With the advantages of being easy to grow and low investment costs, the Millennium tree is especially suitable for local site conditions. After only 3-5 years, each hectare of Millennium tree can yield a harvest of 45-50 million VND, this income level is much higher than many other crops.
From the positive signals of the experimental model of planting millennium trees under the forest canopy, up to now, Huong Son district has expanded the model by 400 hectares, bringing the total area of planting this medicinal plant to 930 hectares in the whole district.
Of which, Son Kim 1 commune planted 300 hectares; Son Kim 2 commune, 230 hectares; Son Hong commune 260 hectares, Son Linh commune 50 hectares, Son Tay commune 19 hectares and Huong Son Forestry Service Company 80 hectares.

Combining medicinal plant cultivation, especially millennium plants, with forest protection not only helps improve people's lives but is also a sustainable economic development strategy, helping Huong Son take advantage of forest resources in the most effective way.
The model of planting millennium trees under the forest canopy in Huong Son is a clear demonstration of the right direction in sustainable socio-economic development.
Not only does it help people escape poverty, it is also an important solution to preserve valuable genetic resources, develop Vietnam's medicinal industry and preserve forest ecosystems.

Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Phan Thanh Tung - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Kim 1 Commune, Huong Son District informed: "Currently, the whole commune of Son Kim 1 has planted over 300 hectares of millennium trees, which are growing well, expected to become a poverty-escape tree for people in the mountains.
For the millennium tree areas planted from the beginning of 2024 in sub-area 68, Ha Trai village, Son Kim 1 commune, although it has only been nearly a year, the trees have grown very well, the tree height is about 50cm, the canopy is 60cm wide, planted with a distance of 2m between each tree.
According to Mr. Phan Thanh Tung, growing the millennium plant is quite cheap, does not require fertilization and still produces harvests year after year. This plant grows similarly to lemongrass and ginger.
Not only is it economically effective, the millennium tree also contributes to raising awareness of forest protection among households living near the forest.

For each hectare, people are also supported with 10 million VND from the support source according to Resolution No. 51/2021/NQ - HDND of the People's Council of Ha Tinh province dated December 16, 2021 on "Regulations on policies to encourage agricultural and rural development associated with building a province that meets new rural standards in Ha Tinh for the period 2022 - 2025".
"The whole district has 84,000 hectares of forest (including 65,000 hectares of natural forest), Huong Son district has great potential to develop the model of planting millennium trees. This is expected to be a new direction, contributing to improving the efficiency of forest economy, protecting the environment, while developing the socio-economy, improving people's lives. Currently, the district is developing a plan to plant over 1,000 hectares of medicinal plants in 2025, aiming to develop the forest economy and protect the forest", said Mr. Le Ngoc Danh - Head of Huong Son Forest Protection Department.
