With a large pond surface area, Mr. Le Van Hien's family in Van Xuan village, Vo Lao commune, Van Ban district has invested in and developed aquaculture. In addition to supplying fish fry to the market, Mr. Hien also raises soft-shell turtles to increase income. Each year, his family sells about 2 tons of fish fry and 1 ton of soft-shell turtles, earning an average of about 500 million VND.
Mr. Hien said: "In 2011, I bought commercial soft-shell turtles to raise. After 3 years, the soft-shell turtles were able to reproduce on their own. Since 2016, my family has been selling both soft-shell turtle breeds and commercial soft-shell turtles."
The turtle farming model of Mr. Le Van Hien's family brings in hundreds of millions of dong in income each year.
Switching from carpentry to livestock development, at the end of 2024, Mr. Tran Van Xuan's family in Van Xuan village invested in building barns and buying piglets to develop a commercial pig farming model. With a herd of more than 70 piglets since December 2024, it is expected that in 2 months, the first batch of pigs weighing more than 8 tons will be sold. "From the beginning, we must pay attention to the issue of vaccines; limit people entering the barn to limit the source of disease transmission to the livestock," said Mr. Xuan.
The commercial pig farming model is also invested in and developed by households in Vo Lao.
Vo Lao commune currently has 5 economic models of farms and family farms, along with many economic models of households, cooperatives linking production, processing, and product consumption, bringing high economic efficiency. From the pilot models, people also actively share and help each other with seed sources and techniques for replication, thereby creating jobs and increasing income for households.
Ms. Luong Thi Giang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Vo Lao Commune, Van Ban District added: "Currently, the commune is developing into an urban area, people are aware of the development of household economy, so they are bold in investing, exploiting the available advantages of the family combined with capital borrowed from channels to develop the economy."
Shifting from traditional agricultural production to agricultural economy, linking production with meeting market demand, this direction is helping Vo Lao people develop the economy and effectively reduce poverty. By the end of 2024, the whole commune still has 79 poor households, accounting for 2.44%. This result is actively contributing to improving material and spiritual life and the process of building new rural areas in the locality.
