Over the past 30 years, from a prominent tourist destination, Ha Long Bay has now become an international cultural and eco-tourism center, attracting millions of visitors each year.
Cruise on Ha Long Bay
December 17, 2024 will be a memorable milestone when Ha Long Bay turns 30 years old being recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage.
Over the past three decades, the majestic beauty of Ha Long Bay has been the pride not only of Quang Ninh province but also of Vietnam, becoming one of the most attractive destinations on the planet.
The “immortal” beauty of a natural wonder
With thousands of undulating limestone islands, mysterious caves, pristine beaches and a rich ecosystem, Ha Long Bay deserves to be a vivid ink painting, fully converging the beauty of nature. This is not only a stunning landscape but also a treasure trove of unique geological and geomorphological values with a system of caves and limestone caves millions of years old.
The scenery in Ha Long Bay changes at different times of the year, giving visitors a new and exciting experience.
The value of Ha Long Bay also lies in its biodiversity, with hundreds of rare species of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic. Legends about dragons and folk tales associated with the rocky islands and famous caves are also factors that add to the mystery and appeal of this place.
Ha Long Bay - New opportunities for the future
On September 16, 2023, Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago (Hai Phong) were recognized by UNESCO as the first dual World Natural Heritage Sites in Vietnam. This is an extremely important event, affirming the value of the two localities of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong in preserving and promoting natural heritage.
Along with expanding the scope of Heritage recognition, the coordination between Quang Ninh and Hai Phong in the management and protection of Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba archipelago will be an important factor in helping to preserve and sustainably develop this heritage in the future.
Over the past 30 years, Ha Long Bay has affirmed its strong vitality and everlasting value. From a prominent tourist destination, Ha Long Bay has now become an international cultural and ecological tourism center, attracting millions of visitors each year.
However, the potential of Ha Long Bay is still very large and has not been fully exploited.
With continued development, Ha Long Bay could become a high-class tourist center, serving high-end tourists. Tourism products here, from cave tours, overnight cruises to sea sports activities such as kayaking, will continue to be upgraded and new, unique products will be developed.
Mr. Vu Kien Cuong, Head of Ha Long Bay Management Board, admitted: “Although Ha Long Bay has developed strongly, we have noticed that in the past 10 years, tourism products here have not had many innovations. Ha Long Bay has only exploited about 10-20% of its tourism potential. We are coordinating research to upgrade existing tourism products and develop more high-end products to attract international tourists and high-spending customers.”
In particular, Ha Long Bay can exploit the luxury cruise model as many countries in Southeast Asia are doing.
A 5-star marina will help elevate the tourism experience, bringing new opportunities to the tourism industry of Quang Ninh and Vietnam.
Conservation and sustainable development
Although many achievements have been made in the conservation and promotion of heritage values, the maintenance and sustainable development of Ha Long Bay still requires special attention.
To preserve this natural heritage sustainably, measures to protect the environment, limit pollution and raise public awareness of the value of Ha Long Bay are important factors.
Investing in research projects, monitoring environmental protection, and developing environmentally friendly tourism products will help Ha Long Bay continue to be an ideal destination for domestic and foreign tourists.
After 30 years, Ha Long Bay has affirmed its value and importance not only to Quang Ninh, Vietnam but also to the world.
To keep Ha Long Bay forever a precious gem of nature, we need to continue to protect and develop this heritage in a sustainable manner, towards a promising future of ecological and cultural tourism development./.
