Farewell to the teacher who initiated the abolition of the primary school graduation exam

People's Teacher Le Phuoc Long, whose initiative to abolish primary school graduation exams was piloted in Quang Tri before being applied nationwide, has just passed away.

On the morning of November 25, the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province announced that People's Teacher Le Phuoc Long, former member of the provincial Party Committee and former director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province, passed away due to old age and poor health at the age of 79.

The funeral will begin on the morning of November 25, and the memorial service and burial will take place on November 27 at his hometown in Sa Nam village, Vinh Long commune, Vinh Linh district.

"He is a sincere, tolerant, generous and dedicated leader who loves and helps his colleagues, especially his subordinates, and is respected by generations of teachers and students," said Mr. Vo Van Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province.

People's Teacher Le Phuoc Long has left many strong impressions on the education sector of Quang Tri province and the whole country.

In 2002, as director of the Department of Education and Training, Mr. Long initiated the policy of abolishing primary school graduation exams with the Ministry of Education and Training, and Quang Tri was chosen as a pilot.

The working group of the Ministry of Education and Training evaluated the results and collected survey questionnaires from teachers, primary school students, local officials and parents. All agreed with the proposal to abolish the primary school graduation exam.

Quang Tri’s approach was “learned” by many other provinces the following school year. The abolition of the primary school graduation exam received support from society and the local education sector, saving budget, time and reducing study pressure for both students and parents…

This is a very important practical basis for the 11th National Assembly to issue Resolution No. 37/2004/QH in December 2004 on "Abolishing primary school graduation exams from the 2004-2005 school year".

For Quang Tri education, Mr. Long has made great contributions, including proposing to the province to choose 2001 as the "Quang Tri Education Year" to leave a mark on the education sector and the whole society. From the district and school budgets, socialization and foreign projects, the project to build hundreds of solid high-rise schools and educational facilities with a total capital of tens of billions of VND.

This was a huge investment in education at that time.

Mr. Long also initiated movements of volunteer teachers to support disadvantaged areas (in 2003), the whole province joined forces to help disadvantaged mountainous areas implement universal lower secondary education (in 2004)...

With such great contributions, Mr. Long was awarded the title of Meritorious Teacher in 2000, People's Teacher in 2008, Third-class Labor Medal (2010), Second-class Anti-American Resistance Medal, 55-year Party membership badge (2024)...
