Batteries, motors and other components in electric cars will use direct current (DC) to operate. Meanwhile, electricity used at home is alternating current (AC), so to charge an electric car, you will need a component called OBC (Onboard Charger) to convert AC to DC.
VinFast electric car models larger than VF 3 or other electric car models are often integrated with OBC in the car. However, VinFast VF 3 is not equipped with this component, which means the car does not have the function of converting AC electricity into DC electricity. As a result, users can only charge VF 3 with DC chargers.
VinFast announced that it will open home charger sales for VF 3 from August 15, but according to a survey, very few dealers have products at this time for customers to choose from (Photo: VF).
On the market, most portable and wall chargers are usually AC chargers, so they will not work with the VF 3. To overcome this problem, VinFast sells a separate portable charger for its mini car line, with two options.
In particular, the standard portable charger for VF 3 costs 4 million VND, with a capacity of 2.2 kW. Second, the 6 million VND charger, in addition to the function of charging at home with a household power outlet, also acts as a converter to be able to charge at a public AC charging station.
VinFast has not announced the capacity of the more expensive charger, but according to Dan Tri reporter's source, it also has a capacity of 2.2kW. This means that even when plugged into an AC charger with a higher capacity (3.5kW, 7kW or 11kW), this way can only charge the VF 3 with a maximum capacity of 2.2kW.
According to the company, when charging at home for VF 3, the battery can be charged from 10% to 70% in 5 hours. The battery pack of this model has a capacity of 18.64kWh.

The launch of portable chargers will help VF 3 car owners proactively charge at home and at public AC charging stations, reducing dependence on DC fast charging stations. This becomes even more important in the context of VinFast's public charging stations in general being overloaded at many locations in major cities.
Pressure on public charging stations in central areas continues to increase as the number of electric cars sold increases. In July alone, a source told Dan Tri that VinFast delivered about 4,000 electric cars. With the VF 3 model, the Vietnamese automaker aims to deliver at least 20,000 units in 2024.
