Network operators must take the lead in data infrastructure On April 10, Viettel opened its 14th Data Center (DC) at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park. This is the first DC in Vietnam designed with high capacity. Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center has a rack capacity 3 times higher than the average, to meet the development trend of AI with the requirement for high-performance chips to increase computing capacity. With 60,000 servers, 2,400 racks, 21,000m2 of floor space and a total power capacity of 30MW, Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center has become one of the largest data centers in Vietnam today. Speaking at the event, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung emphasized that the telecommunications sector has entered the second innovation, from telecommunications infrastructure to digital infrastructure, the infrastructure of the digital economy. This second innovation opens up a new, much larger development space for network operators while the old space has run out of data and is declining. “The 2023 Telecommunications Law has officially mentioned the concept of digital infrastructure. Vietnam is one of the first countries to put the concept of digital infrastructure into law. Vietnam's digital infrastructure includes telecommunications infrastructure, IoT infrastructure, data infrastructure, computing infrastructure, and especially computing for AI - infrastructure that provides technology as a service and digital platforms with infrastructure characteristics. Vietnam's digital infrastructure must have super-large capacity, super-wide bandwidth, be universal, sustainable, green, smart, open and secure. This infrastructure must be prioritized for investment, modernization and be one step ahead to promote national digital transformation, develop the digital economy and digital society. Data infrastructure is a very important part of digital infrastructure. Telecommunication operators have been at the forefront of telecommunications infrastructure, and now must be at the forefront of data infrastructure,” said the Minister. The Minister of Information and Communications said that investing in data centers is a new type of investment for telecommunications carriers. Investing in data centers must go hand in hand with cloud computing services. Otherwise, it is simply leasing locations. Vietnamese carriers must pay attention to developing cloud services and leasing clouds. Every 3 years, the world's data volume doubles. Vietnam's is growing faster. Vietnam currently has 32 small and medium-sized commercial data centers, with a total of more than 20,000 racks and a total designed capacity of 145 MW. Viettel is the largest carrier in Vietnam's data centers, with a total capacity of 87 MW. The launch of Viettel Hoa Lac Data Center today is a testament to Viettel's commitment to building Vietnam's digital infrastructure to international standards. On this occasion, the Ministry of Information and Communications calls on Vietnamese organizations and enterprises to increase the use of Vietnam's data center and cloud computing services, especially when Vietnam's infrastructure and services have met the world's most stringent standards and are competitively priced. In the near future, the Ministry of Information and Communications will submit to the Government a Decree stipulating that data of state agencies must be stored in Vietnam.Viettel is the largest data center operator in Vietnam, with a total capacity of 87 MW. Every citizen has a place to calculate and store data on the cloud. Speaking at the event, Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Chairman of Viettel, said that Viettel will invest in DCs. According to the roadmap, by 2025, Viettel will invest an additional 10,000 billion VND to expand the scale to 17,000 racks. By 2030, Viettel will increase the investment to 40,000 billion VND with a scale of 34,000 racks. During the 35 years of formation and development, Viettel has participated in many times in the process of creating explosions and popularizing telecommunications and technology services. Viettel once had the aspiration that every Vietnamese citizen would have a mobile phone when the mobile phone density in Vietnam was only 4%. And so Viettel and other telecommunications enterprises popularized mobile services, turning mobile from a luxury service into an essential service in the daily life of every citizen.Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Chairman of Viettel, said that Viettel will invest an additional 10,000 billion VND to expand the DC scale to 17,000 racks. Viettel once had the aspiration that every household would have a broadband fiber optic Internet line, and every person would have a smartphone. And that is why Viettel and other businesses in the industry have made efforts to bring fiber optic Internet to every household. To date, about 90% of households have fiber optic lines. By September 2024, according to the plan of the Ministry of Information and Communications, 100% of mobile phone users in Vietnam will have smartphones. Viettel also once had the aspiration to do technology and industry to produce electronic and telecommunications products Made in Vietnam, Made by Vietnam. And that is why the group has participated in and successfully produced telecommunications network equipment such as switchboards, transmission, 4G/5G broadcasting stations, 5G chips, put them into Viettel's network, serving Vietnamese people and starting to reach out to the world. Vietnam has become one of the few countries in the world that can produce these devices. And many other products. Having contributed to the revolution in mobile and broadband Internet, Viettel will now contribute to the explosion of cloud computing, popularizing data infrastructure to contribute to the development of the country's digital economy. "Viettel is ready with all conditions to join Vietnamese enterprises in the explosion of cloud computing, realizing the aspiration that every citizen, every household, every organization and business will have a place to calculate and store on the cloud safely, flexibly and effectively," said Mr. Tao Duc Thang. At the event, Mr. Hoang Van Ngoc, Director of Viettel IDC, said that Vietnam is considered an emerging data market in the global market. Many countries have strategies to build data centers with a long-term vision to promote the national economy.Vietnamnet
