According to calculations on the FIFA football ranking page, the Thai team increased 1 rank from 97th to 96th in the world compared to the FIFA rankings in December 2024. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese team also increased 1 rank to 113th compared to 114th.

However, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team were awarded 4.66 points to accumulate 1,169.45 points, thanks to the two semi-final matches of the 2024 AFF Cup, both of which they won against Singapore with scores of 2-0 and 3-1.
While the Thai team was deducted 0.49 points to currently accumulate a total of 1,230.68 points, it still increased by 1 rank because the Mozambique team in the same position was deducted 4.53 points when competing in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers taking place at the same time at the end of 2024.
The Thai team, who lost the first leg of the 2024 AFF Cup semi-final against the Philippines with a score of 1-2, also lost quite a lot of points, about 3.34 points. However, they managed to regain about 1.69 points thanks to the second leg victory with a score of 3-1 in extra time, in which the decisive goal was scored by player Suphanat Mueanta in the 116th minute to reach the final (won 4-3 overall).
In the upcoming AFF Cup 2024 finals, the results will decide whether Vietnam or Thailand will be crowned champions. But at the same time, points will also be added to the FIFA rankings, with the official rankings expected to be announced in February before the FIFA Days in March 2025.

Both Thailand and Vietnam are currently ranked highest in Southeast Asia. Therefore, each win, draw, or loss will be awarded or deducted quite high points.
If the Vietnamese team wins both matches of the 2024 AFF Cup final, they will accumulate a significant number of points, because they are currently ranked lower than the Thai team. Meanwhile, if the Thai team wins both matches, they will be awarded fewer points, because they are currently ranked 96th in the world's top 100.
The current points and positions of the Thai and Vietnamese teams are also far above the rising rival in the Southeast Asian region, the Indonesian team, which dropped to 130th place (minus 3 places), due to being eliminated in the group stage due to a 0-1 loss to the Philippines. The Malaysian team is still ranked 132nd in the world, while the Singapore team was deducted 3.06 points due to losses to the Vietnamese team, dropping to 161st in the world.
The Vietnamese team will meet the Thai team in the first leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final at 8:00 p.m. on January 2 at Viet Tri Stadium. The second leg will take place at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok at 8:00 p.m. on January 5.
