Vietnam and the United States are considering opening their markets to a variety of new fruits, including passion fruit from Vietnam and tangerines from the United States.
On the afternoon of August 28, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development informed that a working delegation led by Deputy Minister Hoang Trung visited the United States and had a working session with the US Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Hafemeister, and representatives of a number of relevant agencies.
The trip aims to promote market opening for some fruits that Vietnam has export advantages in; strengthen cooperation between the two ministries in the field of plant protection, promote technical cooperation and investment in sustainable agricultural production, and reduce emissions.
At the meeting, both sides expressed their joy at the export of peaches and nectarines from the United States to Vietnam; at the same time, the two sides agreed on technical requirements for Vietnam's passion fruit exports and took a step forward in the process of considering the import of tangerines from the United States to Vietnam.
Deputy Minister Hafemeister said that the United States has never had such a close cooperation relationship with any partner in the region, and committed to further strengthening technical cooperation, enhancing the capacity of the two countries' regulatory agencies in pest control, risk analysis, research and development, and applying new initiatives in crop improvement.
Previously, at a working session with the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung highly appreciated the efforts of both sides in improving market access for plant products through product diversification and pest control measures.
Regarding market access, the two countries agreed to conclude technical discussions to move on to legal procedures to allow the US to import Vietnamese passion fruit; at the same time, they initiated the review process for new products such as seedless lemons, guavas and jackfruits. The two sides also agreed on the pest list and next steps in the review process for tangerines, plums, lemons, pomegranates and some other US products.
This is an important step in expanding agricultural cooperation between Vietnam and the United States, especially in the fields of plant quarantine and export of agricultural products.
