Vietnam earns $20 million from the world's third most expensive spice

Vietnam's export of cardamom and nutmeg products in the first 9 months of 2024 reached 2,501 tons, with a turnover of more than 20 million USD.

According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), cardamom is the third most expensive spice in the world, after saffron and vanilla. Notably, this fruit is abundant in Vietnam and has high export value.

Cardamom is a wild herb found in South America, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, etc. In Vietnam, cardamom grows naturally and is mainly grown in cool climate areas such as Cao Bang and Lao Cai.

Nutmeg is a member of the same family as cardamom. It is native to the Maluku Islands (Indonesia) and is widely grown in tropical countries such as Cambodia, India and Malaysia. In our country, the tree is commonly grown in the southern provinces.

Nutmeg (in some localities also known as nutmeg, jade fruit). This is a fruit of the woody tree family, they are up to 8 - 10m tall, have thin branches, the whole tree is smooth, their leaves grow alternately, green all year round.

According to data from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), export Vietnam's cardamom - nutmeg group in the first 9 months of the year reached 2,501 tons, with a turnover of more than 20 million USD, down 4.8% in output but up 3.1% in turnover compared to the same period in 2023.

There are currently about 30 markets importing this product from Vietnam, of which the Netherlands, the US and the UK are the three largest export markets of this product group from Vietnam with market shares of 31%, 15% and 11.2% respectively.

Of which, Nedspice Vietnam Spice Processing Company Limited and Olam Vietnam Company Limited are the two largest exporting enterprises, reaching 1,496 tons and 497 tons. Previously in 2023, our country exported 3,551 tons, earning 27.4 million USD. The Netherlands, China and America are the 3 largest export markets with output reaching 923 tons, 756 tons and 484 tons respectively.

Vietnam is a country with strengths in spices. Currently, Vietnam has 500,000 hectares of spice crops, with about 400 enterprises and hundreds of thousands of small-scale farmers participating in the production and export of this product. Although leading the world in many varieties, Vietnam's spice crops have only exploited about 40-50% of their potential, and there is still a lot of room for the development of Vietnam's spice industry.

It is expected that the total export turnover of Vietnam's spices by 2025 could reach about 2 billion USD, with an export volume of about 500,000 tons.

Cardamom flowers and fruits are the parts used as medicinal herbs. The fruit is harvested from trees that are at least 3 years old or older, at the stage of changing from green to yellow. The appropriate time to harvest is autumn. After harvesting, dry in the shade and store in a cool, dry place.
