Durian exports reached more than 3.1 billion USD (77,500 billion VND), accounting for nearly half of this year's fruit and vegetable export turnover, according to customs authorities.
According to a quick report from customs, China remains the leading market for Vietnamese durian consumption, accounting for 90% of total turnover, equivalent to more than 2.8 billion USD in 11 months. This level increased by 43% compared to the same period in 2023.
Thailand ranked second, importing about 177 million USD worth of durian, up 82% over the same period last year. The Hong Kong and Japanese markets also recorded growth of 16% and 85% respectively over last year. Vietnamese durian exports to Cambodia alone increased 139 times, reaching nearly 3 million USD.
In the first 11 months, Vietnam earned more than 3.1 billion USD from durian exports, an increase of more than 44% over the same period last year.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that 2024 will be a bumper year for durian and the fruit and vegetable industry in general. According to the association's calculations, this year's fruit and vegetable export turnover is estimated at 7.1 billion USD, an increase of nearly 27% over the same period last year. Thus, durian accounts for nearly half of the revenue from fruit and vegetable exports.
In 2025, durian exports are expected to continue to grow as China opens its market to new products such as durian puree and durian pulp. These products will bring higher added value than fresh durian, helping farmers make the most of raw materials, especially those that do not meet appearance requirements. The country currently has about 154,000 hectares of durian, with an annual output of nearly 1.2 million tons, an average increase of 15%.
In addition to durian, exports of other fruits such as bananas, jackfruit, mangoes and coconuts also recorded an increase of 20-400%. In particular, China's opening of the door for fresh Vietnamese coconuts and passion fruit to be exported to the US has created momentum for Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports to reach new peaks.
