The Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health) said that based on information recorded from the event-based surveillance system, the Department has proactively monitored and supervised information on the development of respiratory diseases in China.
In addition, the Department continues to closely monitor the developments of the epidemic situation; closely coordinates with the World Health Organization and the Focal Point for the implementation of the International Health Regulations (IHR) of China to update and proactively provide and share complete and accurate information, not to cause panic or anxiety, but at the same time not to be subjective or negligent in the face of developments of the epidemic situation, especially in the winter-spring period when weather conditions are favorable for the spread of respiratory pathogens.
In China, according to the report on the results of the surveillance of acute respiratory infectious diseases from December 23 to 29 (week 52 of 2024) by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the main pathogens recorded in the samples collected from the outpatient department and emergency department of hospitals were influenza virus, human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and rhinovirus. China is in winter, and respiratory diseases tend to increase during this time, with the main pathogens being seasonal influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and HMPV.
The Ministry of Health recommends strengthening disease surveillance domestically and at border gates.
According to the report on the results of the surveillance of acute respiratory infectious diseases by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of cases of respiratory diseases with influenza-like symptoms in week 52 of 2024 was lower than that in the same period of 2023. The respiratory infections currently spreading in the country are common diseases, not unusual medical events at present.
According to the Department of Preventive Medicine, in the country, the cold and humid winter-spring weather is favorable for infectious diseases to spread rapidly, especially diseases transmitted through the respiratory tract. Provincial and municipal health departments need to strengthen direction and implement proactive solutions to prevent infectious diseases in the winter-spring season. Localities need to focus on regular monitoring, closely monitoring the situation of infectious diseases in the community, medical facilities and border gates; in which, pay special attention to respiratory diseases, cases of acute respiratory infections and severe viral pneumonia syndrome. It is necessary to monitor events to detect early signs of abnormalities or new outbreaks in the community; thoroughly handle outbreaks; at the same time, cooperate with the Institutes of Hygiene and Epidemiology/Pasteur to collect samples, test for pathogens, assess risks and propose timely treatment measures.
