With a coastline of over 3,260 km, Vietnam is among the 10 countries with the highest index of coastline length compared to its land area.
Vietnam also has great potential for marine economy. The marine economy is expected to contribute significantly to the overall development of the country's economy and society.
To implement the Strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy, one of the solutions is to promote innovation, creativity, application of advanced scientific and technological achievements in marine research and expand foreign relations and international cooperation on the sea.
To concretize this, recently the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the French Institute for Research for Development (IRD) jointly organized the Workshop "Science and Marine Economy".
At the workshop, scientists updated and shared the latest research related to oceanography, marine ecosystems and economies, and computational models in marine and ocean research.
The workshop also addressed the issue of microplastic pollution in the environment and the development of renewable energy from the sea. At the same time, scientists discussed and proposed science and technology for green economic development based on the experience sharing of the locality, Hai Phong city.
The cooperative relationship between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the French Institute for Development Research was established more than 20 years ago, in 1999.
The two sides have jointly developed and implemented joint research programs and projects to serve sustainable development goals.
These include studies on climate change, especially in the field of marine ecology and environment, and the relationship between humans and the living environment in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology said that in 2024, this unit will cooperate with the French Research Institute for Development to carry out a joint marine ecological and environmental survey.
This is the second joint marine survey conducted by VAST and IRD. Previously, in 2014, the two sides jointly conducted measurements of marine optics, sediments, hydrography, hydrochemistry and marine physics in the coastal waters of the Mekong River, the Hai Phong - Ha Long sea area and the coastal waters of the Red River Delta using the scientific research vessel ALIS (France).
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Quan, Director of the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology): “ We not only absorb advanced research techniques from our partners, but also gradually move towards proactively proposing issues that Vietnam is interested in. This is to solve specific problems in marine environmental resource management and sustainable development of the marine economy .”
“ Through the cooperation between VAST and IRD, Vietnam has trained a team of potential young scientists. This cooperation also affirms Vietnam's position in marine science and technology, making positive contributions to the marine science research community in the world, ” said Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Quan.
In 2024, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the French Research Institute for Development will also coordinate to organize specialized courses, and deploy the LEGOS Laboratory for Geology and Oceanography and the LOTUS International Joint Laboratory for Research on the Combined Land-Ocean-Atmosphere System at the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (Vietnam-France University).
