(Dan Tri) – Vietnam welcomes the Seoul Court of Appeals upholding the verdict, requiring the Korean government to compensate more than 30 million won (20,000 USD) to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh in Quang Nam.

On January 22, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang answered a question from Dan Tri reporter about the Seoul Court of Appeals upholding the verdict, requiring the South Korean government to compensate more than 30 million won (20,000 USD) to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, who lost her family in the Quang Nam massacre in 1968.

Vietnam speaks out about the court's request for the Korean government to compensate victims of the Quang Nam massacre.

Ms. Hang said that Vietnam welcomes the recent ruling of the Seoul Court of Appeals.

This is a verdict that reflects historical truth, contributing to realizing the spirit of "putting the past behind and looking toward the future," according to the spokesperson.

Ms. Hang affirmed that with this viewpoint, Vietnam wishes to further develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries with the Republic of Korea; at the same time, take practical actions to overcome the consequences of war, contributing to consolidating and enhancing the friendship and good cooperative relations between the two countries and peoples.

Previously, the Seoul Court of Appeals upheld the lower court's ruling, requiring the Korean government to pay 30 million won (equivalent to 20,580 USD) plus additional compensation due to delayed compensation to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh.

Ms. Thanh is the plaintiff in a lawsuit against the South Korean army for the massacre of about 70 Vietnamese people in Phong Nhi village (Dien An ward, Dien Ban town, Quang Nam province) in 1968.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh filed a lawsuit demanding compensation from the Korean government in 2020. In 2023, the Seoul Court of First Instance in South Korea ruled that the government should compensate Ms. Thanh more than 30 million won.
