Vietnam strives for gender equality and women's empowerment

On the morning of March 11 in New York, the United States, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with the theme: "Accelerating the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women and children, through hunger eradication, poverty reduction, institutional strengthening and gender-responsive financing" .

Speaking at the meeting, the UN Secretary-General, Chairwoman of the Commission on the Status of Women, President of the UN General Assembly and Executive Director of the UN Gender Equality (UN Women)... expressed concern about the slow progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, especially on hunger eradication and poverty reduction; said that women and girls in many parts of the world have not been fully guaranteed their rights, and are even abused in conflicts; emphasized the need to increase women's economic empowerment, increase investment in education, end conflicts, strengthen peace, comply with international human rights and humanitarian law, empower women and girls, support and promote the role of women in responding to climate change and progress on development, finance, peace and security. On behalf of the Vietnamese delegation, Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan spoke, highlighting a number of Vietnam's achievements in gender equality; affirming that women today are an indispensable force in all processes at all levels of peace, security, social progress and sustainable development; it is necessary to focus on helping women to develop their full potential to participate in economic, political and social activities; promoting the empowerment of women and girls in science, technology, digital transformation, associated with preventing and combating discrimination and violence in cyberspace, enhancing the role of women in building a peaceful, stable, inclusive and sustainable international environment, and addressing non-traditional security challenges. The Vice President also affirmed that Vietnam is always ready to cooperate closely with countries and partners for gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, leaving no one behind. On this occasion, the Vice President had bilateral meetings with Swiss President Viola Amherd, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina, UNDP Director General Achim Steiner, New York Mayor Eric Adams... to discuss areas of cooperation between Vietnam and its partners as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern. * The Swiss President affirmed that he always attaches importance to the friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam; saying that the two countries still have a lot of room and potential for economic, trade and investment cooperation. * The Latvian Prime Minister said that the two countries need to continue promoting cooperation in other potential areas such as information and communication, science and technology, labor, and pharmaceuticals; emphasizing that Latvia will continue to prioritize educational and training cooperation with Vietnam. * The UNDP Director General affirmed his readiness to support Vietnam in implementing its commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and implementing the partnership for a just energy transition, accelerating the decarbonization process and ensuring access to clean energy at affordable prices, as well as acting as a bridge between Vietnam and international donors, as well as between Mekong River basin countries to support Vietnam in achieving its goals. * The Mayor of New York affirmed that New York wishes to continue promoting good cooperative relations with Vietnam, especially implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and New York City signed in September 2023; affirmed that it will strengthen relations with Vietnamese partners, promote cultural, tourism, culinary, student exchanges, as well as connect businesses of both sides in the fields of high technology and innovation. Also on the occasion of his working trip to New York, the Vice President visited and expressed condolences to the family of left-wing activist and loyal friend of Vietnam Merle Ratner who suddenly passed away; laid a wreath at the Memorial for the victims of the 2001 terrorist attack; visited Columbia University; visited the headquarters and worked with officials and staff of the Delegation, permanent agencies of Vietnam in New York, and Vietnamese officials working at United Nations agencies./.
