According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Economic Outlook Report, a series of developing countries are expected to have the highest growth rates until 2029.
The third-smallest country in South America by land area, Guyana is forecast to be the world's fastest-growing economy between now and 2029. Vietnam is the only Southeast Asian country in the top 10, with growth forecast at 6.4% between 2024 and 2029.
The IMF forecasts that Vietnam will have a period of strong economic growth, becoming one of the fastest growing emerging economies. This is expected to open up great opportunities for Vietnam to attract foreign investment and promote economic development in the region and the world.
In an article posted on finance.yahoo.com (USA) on April 4, in 2024, the growth of Asian economies will improve and is forecast to reach 4.5%, higher than the previous forecast of 4.2%. Among the fastest growing economies in the region, Vietnam ranks 6th.
The basis for determining the 20 fastest growing economies in Asia in 2024 includes the following factors: real GDP growth rate and GDP per capita growth rate.
Both of these indicators are internationally recognized to measure the health and progress of an economy.
According to the article, Asian economies are forecast to contribute more than 60% to global growth.
139 students nationwide are exempted from graduation exams and directly admitted to university in 2024
139 12th graders nationwide are exempted from graduation exams and admitted directly to university this year.
The Ministry of Education and Training said on May 22 that these are the students who have been called to participate in the selection of teams for international and regional Olympic competitions in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Informatics.
Of these, 30 students took the Math team selection exam; 30 students took the Physics exam; 25-27 students took the remaining subjects. Most (137 students) came from specialized schools and gifted schools.
The Ministry’s decision is based on the regulations for graduation exams and university and college admissions. Students must have good conduct and good academic performance in the second semester of grade 12, and be in the high score group in the national excellent student exam. Last school year, 140 students were in this category.
According to the Ministry, this year, the whole country has more than one million candidates registering for the high school graduation exam, about 43,000 more than last year.
The exam takes place on June 26-28 with four papers, including Math, Literature, English and a combined exam (Natural Sciences or Social Sciences).
Last year, 98.88% of students passed the graduation exam, the highest since 2015.
The world's first blast tunnel boring machine through hard rock
Chinese scientists have developed the world's first rock-blasting and tunneling machine (BBM), which can increase efficiency by more than 30% when drilling through super-hard rock.
Not only possessing the power of a modern tunnel boring machine, BBM uses a combination of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, sensor and guidance technologies, allowing the simultaneous use of traditional drilling and blasting methods. The machine is equipped with two cutting heads and takes advantage of the complementary advantages of each method, improving efficiency and being environmentally friendly. According to Chen, this design effectively combines the functions of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with traditional drilling and blasting methods, including multiple excavation modes.
BBM has completed testing under three different operating conditions. The test results show that in super hard rock conditions, the efficiency of the hollow cutting head can be increased by 30% after pre-cracking treatment. One limitation of conventional TBMs is their tendency to get stuck and cause delays when encountering complex geological conditions such as sudden rockfalls, fault zones, and large deformations in soft rock layers.
South Korea records first death from flesh-eating bacteria this year
South Korean health officials announced that a female patient has died after being infected with Vibrio vulnificus bacteria (commonly known as “flesh-eating” bacteria).
This is the first death in South Korea from this bacterial infection this year.
The 70-year-old woman died on May 16 after experiencing leg pain and swelling for several days, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement. On May 20, doctors determined that she had been infected with the pathogen Vibrio vulnificus, which can be found in warm coastal waters or raw seafood.
According to the agency, the rate of Vibrio vulnificus infections (commonly known as “ flesh-eating bacteria”) in South Korea tends to increase during the summer months. Of the 69 cases of the bacteria detected in South Korea in 2023, more than 90% occurred between August and October. Since most infected people have mild symptoms and do not receive medical treatment, the actual number of people infected with the bacteria is believed to be much higher.
In the United States, Vibrio vulnificus bacteria causes about 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths each year.
