Committed to focusing resources and long-term operations in Vietnam, the President of Waikato University hopes to expand cooperation in a number of other areas such as fintech, artificial intelligence, cyber attack prevention, and information security.
On the morning of March 10, in Auckland, during his official visit to New Zealand, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Professor Neil Quigley, President of Waikato University and Chairman of the Board of Members of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Waikato is one of New Zealand's leading universities, ranked among the best universities in the world. The university has effective cooperation activities with the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam and other agencies, such as the Vietnam Social Security, the Department of Training and Development of Officials (Central Organization Committee) and has many successful cooperation programs with Vietnamese universities (National Economics, Ho Chi Minh City Economics, Van Lang). Currently, there are 50 Vietnamese students (out of a total of 2,000 international students in New Zealand) studying at Waikato. Waikato is the only university in New Zealand with a full-time bachelor's program in Vietnam, with two majors: supply chain management and digital business, both of which are fields in which Vietnam needs high-quality human resources.

Professor Neil Quigley said that Vietnam is a priority area for Waikato in the Southeast Asian region. Vietnam is a country with a young and dynamic population. Waikato is committed to focusing resources and long-term operations in Vietnam and wishes to expand cooperation with Vietnam in a number of other areas such as fintech, artificial intelligence, cyber attack prevention, and information security. Waikato is preparing to establish a medical university - the third medical university in New Zealand. In the future, Waikato wishes to develop research cooperation and technology transfer in this field with Vietnam; as well as continue long-term cooperation with Vietnamese agencies in training staff and training high-quality human resources.

Sharing some macroeconomic policy recommendations as requested by the Prime Minister, Mr. Neil Quigley also highly appreciated the solutions and results of macroeconomic management, monetary policy, and inflation control of Vietnam, and in some areas and aspects, Vietnam has done better than many developed countries. As Chairman of the Board of Members of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Professor Neil Quigley is ready to promote cooperation activities and share experiences with Vietnam in the fields of credit, financial management, and banking. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the interest, efforts, perseverance, and contributions of Professor Neil Quigley to educational cooperation between the two countries; as well as the effective cooperation activities of Waikato University with Vietnamese universities and agencies.

The Prime Minister witnessed the exchange of memorandums of understanding between educational institutions of the two countries.

Informing that the two sides are preparing to sign a new strategic cooperation plan on education (2023 - 2026), the Prime Minister was pleased that Vietnam is one of the Southeast Asian countries with the most students studying in New Zealand. The Prime Minister suggested that New Zealand in general and Waikato University in particular continue to promote cooperation with Vietnam in human resource training, especially in emerging industries, digital technology, semiconductor chips, etc.; increase exchanges of lecturers, students, programs, textbooks, experience sharing, etc. Waikato University continues to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese students studying here. Under the witness of the Prime Minister, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son presented the Medal for the Cause of Education to Professor Neil Quigley. Waikato University and Hanoi University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vinh University and Nam Can Tho University also exchanged Memorandums of Understanding on continuing to implement joint training programs in business, artificial intelligence, cyber security, big data, communications and health.
