According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, upon hearing that prolonged flooding has caused great damage to property and crops in North Pyongan Province, North Korea, on August 15, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son sent a message of condolences to Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and the North Korean people in the affected areas. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the border city of Sinuiju and Uiju County, North Pyongan Province, have suffered heavy rains, causing more than 4,100 houses and nearly 3,000 hectares of agricultural land to be flooded. The central government and localities across the country are urgently sending tents and daily necessities to support people in the flooded areas. The North Korean military has dispatched about 10 planes to evacuate 4,200 people.
In late July, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited flood-hit areas and oversaw rescue efforts. Reuters reported that Kim announced plans to provide shelter for those affected by the disaster, including sending about 15,400 people to Pyongyang until their homes are rebuilt. Kim estimated that it would take about two to three months for people to get back on their feet after rebuilding their homes and overcoming the consequences of the disaster.
