Outstanding results after 6 consecutive weeks of meetings of the 58th Session of the UNSC include: (i) The High-Level Meeting took place in the first week with the participation of 4 heads of state, 6 Vice Presidents/Deputy Prime Ministers, 95 Ministers and Deputy Ministers of UN member countries, along with the President of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Leaders of intergovernmental international organizations and non-governmental organizations based in Geneva;
(ii) 32 Resolutions were adopted; (iii) 9 thematic discussions on human rights mainstreaming, the death penalty, early warning and genocide prevention, responding to HIV and leaving no one behind, realizing labour rights and social protection rights in the informal economy, rights of persons with disabilities, children's rights on the topic of priorities to promote a child rights-based approach to early childhood development, children's rights on the topic of early childhood development in emergencies: putting children's rights first;
(iv) Discussion of 80 thematic reports; (v) discussion and dialogue sessions with 41 Special Procedures of the UN Human Rights Council and UN human rights mechanisms;
(vi) Discussions and dialogues on the human rights situation in a number of countries; (vii) Completing the procedures for adopting the results of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) cycle IV of 13 countries.
Within the framework of the 58th Regular Session, Vietnam chaired the development and presentation of the Joint Statement on promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve gender equality, which was widely supported by countries. The Joint Statement emphasized the importance of promoting the full and rapid implementation of the SDGs to achieve gender equality, including priorities such as enhancing the participation of women and girls in decision-making; promoting their leadership role in science and technology; ensuring equal participation in peace and security processes; strengthening capacity and budget for gender mainstreaming in policy. The empowerment of women and girls is key to protecting human rights and sustainable development.
During the 58th session, the Vietnamese delegation actively contacted, exchanged and consulted with delegations of other countries, participated in the development of documents, co-sponsored many initiatives in the spirit of dialogue and cooperation, notably the development of a joint statement with the sponsorship of 65 countries. These activities contributed to demonstrating Vietnam's consistent viewpoints, policies and achievements in promoting and protecting human rights, and working with other countries to ensure that the activities of the Human Rights Council are consistent with the fundamental principles of international law.
The Vietnamese delegation also delivered speeches at many meetings and discussions on many topics of high interest such as realizing labor rights and social security rights in the informal economy; children's rights; responding to HIV and leaving no one behind; cultural rights; food rights; rights of people with disabilities; the issue of Palestine and the occupied Arab territories...
In their speeches, the Vietnamese delegation clearly stated Vietnam's policy on promoting and protecting human rights of all people; shared the measures that Vietnam has taken to promote and protect the rights of vulnerable groups; affirmed the need to resolve political divisions and differences and promote cooperation and build trust through the spirit of dialogue and cooperation, in accordance with the fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Together with ASEAN countries, the Vietnamese delegation also made a number of joint statements on ASEAN topics of common interest and sharing such as technical cooperation and capacity building.
The active participation of the Vietnamese delegation at the 58th Session of the Human Rights Council demonstrates Vietnam's efforts and responsibility in the first session of the final year as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term, contributing to creating an important premise for Vietnam to prepare for re-election as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term.
