The last gold medal of the athletics team today belongs to the 4x400m mixed relay team.
Despite running in the pouring rain, athlete Luong Duc Phuoc still won a precious silver medal in the men's 1,500m event. In an interview after finishing, Duc Phuoc said that although he tried his best, he could not overcome the strong opponent from Thailand. In the javelin throw event, Nguyen Hoai Van also won a silver medal. At the end of the first competition day, Athletics won another gold medal in the mixed 4x400m relay event for both men and women. Thus, in total, Athletics won 2 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal on the first competition day.
Meanwhile, in the pool not far away, swimmer Tran Hung Nguyen continued his success by finishing first with a time of 4 minutes 19 seconds 12 in the men's 400m medley. Notably, the runner-up in this event was Nguyen Quang Thuan - the younger brother of "little mermaid" Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, with a time of 4 minutes 21 seconds 03.
In an interview after winning his third gold medal at the SEA Games, Tran Hung Nguyen said that before entering the competition, he was very worried because he was afraid he would not be able to complete the target he had set for himself. “The 400m medley is the most difficult distance in swimming because not everyone can swim well in all 4 styles, but in the end I did it and won my third gold medal at the 32nd SEA Games. When I reached the finish line, I was very tired but very happy to have completed the task in this difficult distance.”
Tran Hung Nguyen also sent his congratulations to his junior Quang Thuan: "Thuan is a young athlete but he has good will and determination so he will definitely go far in the future."
Huy Hoang and Kim Son won gold and silver medals in the 1,500m event.
In the 1,500m freestyle event, Vietnam's number 1 swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang won the gold medal with a time of 15 minutes 11 seconds 24. This is Huy Hoang's first individual gold medal at this SEA Games. Runner-up in this event was swimmer Nguyen Huu Kim Son with a time of 15 minutes 35 seconds 21. At the end of the competition day on May 8, the swimming team won 2 more gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.
Bokator had a successful match day
Notably, the Kun Bokator team of Vietnam won 6 gold medals and 3 bronze medals in today's competition day. This is a remarkable achievement of the Vietnamese martial artists in their first time competing in the regional arena. "This is the first time the Kun Bokator team, which is a Vietnamese traditional martial arts athlete, has been represented at the regional sports festival. It is an honor and pride, so the whole team has tried to compete and contribute to spreading the good traditional cultural values of the nation to friends in the region", Dr. Luu Trong Tuan - in charge of traditional martial arts - General Department of Sports and Physical Training shared.
Thus, at the end of the third day of competition, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation won 15 more gold medals, bringing the total number of gold medals won after the first three days of competition of the Games to 30 gold medals, 29 silver medals and 33 bronze medals, ranking second after the host delegation of Cambodia.
