Vietnam represents ASEAN to speak at the 55th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung affirmed that ASEAN always attaches importance to cooperation in the field of fisheries, considering this one of the priorities of economic integration.

On March 7, within the framework of the 55th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, spoke on behalf of ASEAN in the Dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, on the topic of fisheries exploitation and ensuring the right to food.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung affirmed that ASEAN always attaches importance to cooperation in the field of fisheries, considering it one of the priorities of economic integration, while playing an important role in ensuring food security, promoting the economy and supporting livelihoods throughout the ASEAN region.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung shared many ASEAN initiatives to support the activities of small-scale fishermen, of which the Strategic Action Plan on ASEAN Fisheries Cooperation (2021-2025) identifies strategic priorities, including enhancing the resilience of the fisheries and aquaculture sector to climate change and natural shocks, as well as supporting small-scale fishermen to improve productivity and competitiveness.

In addition, the ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Crisis Response, adopted in September 2023, underscores the commitment to facilitate access to finance for fishers to improve the long-term resilience and sustainability of the fisheries sector; and underscores the need to optimize available resources in ASEAN for food production, especially for farmers, small-scale fishers and other vulnerable groups facing food insecurity.

On the same day, in his national speech, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung also highlighted Vietnam's efforts and achievements in fisheries development; shared about the "Vietnam Fisheries Development Strategy to 2030, vision to 2045" approved by the Prime Minister in March 2021.

The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam will continue to promote and protect the rights of workers in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, especially women, helping them access financial resources, market information, capital and appropriate technology, as well as ensuring jobs with stable income and safety nets.

Previously, in his speech at the Dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Mission in Geneva Cung Duc Han shared Vietnam's commitment to promoting cultural rights and ensuring comprehensive participation in the field of scientific research.

Mr. Cung Duc Han emphasized that the Vietnamese Constitution guarantees that everyone has the right to conduct scientific or technological research, literary or artistic creation, and to enjoy the benefits from these activities.

Sharing the recommendations of the UN Special Rapporteur on ensuring the effective participation of vulnerable groups, the Vietnamese representative affirmed that based on the Socio-Economic Development Strategy for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045, Vietnam has implemented many initiatives to remove barriers, opening up more opportunities for discovery, innovation and sustainable national development.
