Vietnam spent 158.4 million USD importing grapes |
Vietnam has a very famous grape growing region, but the output is quite modest compared to domestic consumption demand. Therefore, every year, grapes are always in the Top of the most imported fruits to Vietnam.
At the June 2024 trade promotion conference with the Vietnamese trade office system abroad organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on the morning of July 2, Mr. Bui Trung Thuong - Vietnamese Trade Counselor in India - said that the cost of 1 kg of Indian grapes is only about 1 USD, if adding transportation costs and profits when returning to Vietnam, it will be sold for about 3 USD. This is a competitive price, so India really wants Vietnam to open its market for their grapes.
According to Mr. Bui Trung Thuong, India has only opened its market for Vietnamese dragon fruit. Since 2018, this market has not opened any new products for the Vietnamese fruit industry. The reason is that India also wants Vietnam to open its market for some of their fruits such as grapes and pomegranates.
"Vietnam can consider opening its market for this fruit in the near future. Many Indian businesses really want to bring grapes to Vietnam," said Mr. Thuong.
At this time, there are no specific statistics on grape import turnover, but this fruit always covers the Vietnamese market. At supermarkets, fruit shops, traditional markets and "online markets" there are dozens of types of grapes imported from Japan, Australia, the US and China. However, the most popular are still grapes imported from China. Notably, compared to imported grapes sold on the market, grapes originating from China are often very cheap, even super cheap.
Accordingly, the price of seedless Ruby grapes and red grapes is only 50,000 VND/kg; corn milk grapes, only 130,000 VND/box of 6 - 7kg (about 20,000 VND/kg); milk grapes poured into Vietnamese markets have many types, prices range from 60,000 - 140,000 VND/kg.
According to experts, grapes are imported all year round, not seasonally. However, summer is the peak season, when grapes are harvested in many countries, so large quantities of goods are imported to Vietnam. As a rule, the more goods are imported, the cheaper the price will be.
