According to the General Department of Customs (Ministry of Finance), in 2024, Vietnam's rice exports to the Philippines will reach about 4.15 million tons, a sharp increase compared to the previous year. Rice export turnover to this market will exceed 2.6 billion USD, making an important contribution to Vietnam's total export turnover to the Philippines, which will exceed 6 billion USD for the first time in 2024. The Philippines is also Vietnam's largest rice consuming market. |
Vietnam is currently the Philippines' main rice supplier, accounting for about 80-85% of the country's total rice imports. The trade office forecasts that in 2025, Vietnam will export about 4.35 million tons of rice to the Philippines. The advantages of Vietnamese rice lie in its reasonable prices, stable quality, convenient transportation, and sustainable trade relations between the two countries.
Starting January 1, 2025, the Philippine government will impose a retail price ceiling of 58 pesos per kilogram of rice to control food inflation. In February 2025, the country also declared a state of emergency on food security to increase its market intervention powers. However, these measures are considered short-term and have limited effectiveness.
According to the deal, the Philippines will remain the world’s largest rice importer by 2025. Vietnam will continue to be a key export partner. However, businesses need to closely monitor risks from the Philippines’ price management policy as well as competitive pressure from other suppliers such as Thailand, India and Cambodia.
