Vietnam and Cambodia agreed to promote economic cooperation and connectivity, especially in the Vietnam-Cambodia border area, aiming for a trade turnover of 20 billion USD in the coming years.
According to the special correspondent of VNA, within the framework of the State visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia, on the morning of July 13,President To Lam met with President of the Cambodian National Assembly Khuon Sudary.
At the meeting, National Assembly Chairman Khuon Sudary warmly welcomed President To Lam on his state visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia, saying that the leaders of the two countries always have a tradition of visiting each other first and this visit will be a new milestone, contributing to promoting and deepening the relationship between the two countries.
The National Assembly Chairman expressed his gratitude for the wholehearted and sincere assistance that the Party, State and people of Vietnam have given to Cambodia in the past struggle for national independence, including working with the Cambodian army and people to overthrow the genocidal regime, as well as in the current cause of national construction and development.
The National Assembly Chairman was pleased to announce that the new Cambodian National Assembly building donated by Vietnam is expected to be inaugurated and put into use soon.
Respectfully conveying the greetings of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and senior leaders of the Party and State to National Assembly Chairman Khuon Sudary, President To Lam expressed his impression of the strong and dynamic development of the country and people of Cambodia under the wise reign of King Norodom Sihamoni and the talented leadership of the Senate, National Assembly and Royal Government with the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) as the core.
On this occasion, the President congratulated Cambodia on successfully organizing the 5th Senate election on February 25 and the 4th Capital/Provincial/District Council election on May 26, saying that the CPP's victory in the elections demonstrated the people's trust and support for the role of the CPP under the leadership of President Hun Sen.
The two sides were pleased to note that bilateral cooperation has maintained a stable development momentum in recent times; leaders of the two countries have maintained regular contact, and bilateral cooperation mechanisms have continued to be effective, demonstrating the increasing connection and solidarity between the two countries.
The two sides highly appreciated the cooperation between the two National Assemblies in implementing the Cooperation Agreement signed in November 2022 as well as in cooperating with the Lao National Assembly to successfully organize the First Summit of the National Assemblies of the three countries in December 2023, creating a foundation for the strong development of the cooperation between the three National Assemblies, strengthening the traditional friendship, solidarity and closeness between the three countries.
The two leaders emphasized the need to continue to maintain, preserve, constantly consolidate and promote the good neighborly relationship, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability between the two countries on the basis of special trust and mutual respect, for the benefit of the two peoples.
The two sides agreed to continue maintaining regular high-level and all-level contacts and exchanges through all channels, including the parliamentary channel; promote economic cooperation and connectivity, especially in the Vietnam-Cambodia border area, and work towards the target of US$20 billion in trade turnover in the coming years.
The two sides will continue to coordinate efforts to build a border of peace, friendship, cooperation and sustainable development; at the same time, continue to promote the role of the two countries' National Assemblies in promoting bilateral relations, especially in building institutions, perfecting the legal system for enhancing connectivity between the two economies, expanding cooperation in education and training, facilitating the enhancement and improvement of cooperation effectiveness in all fields; continue to strengthen relations between the three countries of Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam, closely coordinate and support each other at parliamentary and international forums such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF)...
On this occasion, President To Lam thanked and requested the Cambodian side to continue to pay attention to and remove difficulties for people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia, including naturalization, helping people of Vietnamese origin stabilize their lives, integrate into the local community, and act as a bridge of friendship between the two countries; at the same time, create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises investing and doing business in Cambodia.
On the same morning, President To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation offered flowers at the Independence Monument, laid flowers at the statue of the late King Norodom Sihanouk and laid wreaths at the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monument in the capital Phnom Penh.
