Vietnam strongly commits to contributing to UN humanitarian relief efforts

On December 10, at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York (USA), a High-Level Event on Contributions to the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) 2025 was held, organized by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA). The event was attended by many leaders and officials of relevant UN agencies and international organizations, along with representatives of most member countries.

According to VNA correspondent in New York, in his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that CERF is a successful lesson in responding to humanitarian crises and promptly supporting affected people. Over the past nearly two decades, CERF has spent more than 9 billion USD on humanitarian efforts globally, providing relief to millions of people and many communities around the world. The UN Secretary-General called on countries to increase financial contributions to CERF to reach the target of 1 billion USD per year for humanitarian relief work. Representatives of countries and international organizations welcomed the role of CERF and took this opportunity to pledge a total of more than 350 million USD to CERF in 2025, of which the Netherlands contributed 58 million USD, Norway 40 million USD, Denmark 26 million USD, Canada 20 million USD... Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Do Hung Viet highly appreciated the role and practical effectiveness of CERF in supporting many countries to respond to humanitarian crises, for example, the emergency support of 2 million USD to help Vietnam overcome the consequences of Typhoon Yagi (Vietnam calls it Typhoon No. 3) in September 2024. The Deputy Minister emphasized that super typhoon Yagi is just one example of the trend of increasing demand for humanitarian assistance globally due to the impact of conflicts, wars, natural disasters and climate change. The Vietnamese representative called on countries and donor partners to respond to the UN Secretary-General's call to help CERF mobilize sufficient resources to meet humanitarian assistance needs globally.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet affirmed Vietnam's strong commitment to humanitarian relief efforts, helping people recover from natural disasters and catastrophes. In addition to its annual contribution to CERF, in recent years, Vietnam has contributed more than 500,000 USD through CERF to support people in Ukraine and Syria, 500,000 USD to the Palestinian people through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Vietnam has also provided more than 2 million USD through bilateral aid to countries affected by natural disasters, and for the first time sent rescue and relief forces to Türkiye after the historic earthquake in that country in 2023.
