Vietnam team gets extra points
There are no FIFA Days in December, only the AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship) is held in Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese team started off well with two wins against Laos 4-1 and Indonesia 1-0. These matches were added to the FIFA rankings for December. Thanks to that, coach Kim Sang-sik's team accumulated 3.68 points for a total of 1,164.79 points, moving up 2 places.

This is the highest increase in rankings compared to other teams in the world in December. This helps the Vietnamese team experience for the first time the feeling of being the team with the highest increase in rankings in a period of the FIFA rankings.
However, with the recent 1-1 draw with the Philippines, the Vietnamese team will have points deducted, but not significantly, and will be counted in the FIFA rankings for February 2025.
Thanks to a 2-rank increase to 114th in the world, the Vietnamese team also returned to the top 20 in Asia and ranked 2nd in Southeast Asia after Thailand. The Thai team also counted 2 wins in the AFF Cup group stage, adding 2.93 points to accumulate a total of 1,231.17 points, still ranked 97th in the world, 15th in Asia.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian team was deducted 1.7 points, with a total of 1,133.41 points, falling 2 places to 127th in the world, 23rd in Asia and still 3rd in Southeast Asia. The gap between the Indonesian team and the Vietnamese team has also widened to 13 places, compared to 9 places on the FIFA rankings updated on November 28.

In the upcoming matches at the AFF Cup 2024, if the Vietnamese team wins against the Myanmar team to enter the semi-finals, then aims for the final match and wins the championship, it will accumulate a significant number of points on the FIFA rankings and gradually return to the world top 100 as in 2023.
Among the other teams competing in the AFF Cup 2024, Malaysia remains ranked 132nd in the world. The Philippines dropped one place to 150th, while Singapore rose one place to 160th. Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Timor Leste did not move up due to poor performance.
In the world region, the rankings of the teams remain the same with Argentina still ranked number 1, followed by France, Spain, England and Brazil in the top 5 leading teams. In the Asian region, Japan is still ranked number 1 and 15th in the world.
