As Election Day approaches, polls both nationwide and in battleground states – where the “life and death” stakes for both candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are decided – have yet to show who is more dominant, while the margin of error is widening.

This is perhaps the most tumultuous election ever. Ms. Harris replacing President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee is a huge change. On the Republican side, lawsuits and criminal trials against Mr. Trump, two failed assassination attempts.

America is increasingly politically divided, especially after the 2016 and 2020 elections. Polarization in American society is very large while the gap between the Democratic and Republican Parties is widening.

On the world level, there are also crises that can have a negative impact on the internal situation of the United States, especially the Middle East crisis. In such a situation, it is difficult to predict who will be the winner.

For countries around the world, the question now is who will win. The differences between the two candidates are clear, but we can see the common ground that America certainly cannot be completely isolated and America must continue to trade in the world.

Competition between major powers is a bipartisan issue, and as great power competition intensifies, the pressure to choose sides with other countries becomes more significant.

It is a challenge but also an opportunity, intertwined rather than separate, and something other countries need to look at.

For Vietnam, it must be seen that the Vietnam-US relationship has developed well and is mutually beneficial. Looking back over the past nearly 30 years, the relationship between Vietnam and the US has continuously developed with the support of both the Democratic and Republican Parties.

During that time, US presidents all visited Vietnam, including Mr. Trump twice in 2017 and 2019.

Ms. Harris, as vice president, is also the first senior official of the Biden administration to visit Vietnam in 2021, in the first year of her term, and in Hanoi she announced the donation of millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccine from the US to Vietnam.

We must monitor and have scenarios to continue the momentum in this relationship. If Mr. Trump wins, he will not prioritize green transition but continue to use fossil energy, including oil and gas and liquefied natural gas.

Or if Ms. Harris is elected, she is likely to put more emphasis on standards, including labor standards…

Whatever it is, America's economic, trade, investment and strategic interests are certainly in the Asia-Pacific, the Indo-Pacific and Vietnam is still an important link.

It is extremely important that whoever takes power, Vietnam needs to emphasize its consistent policy of considering cooperation with the US as one of its top priorities.

At the same time, it is necessary to continue promoting the momentum of the relationship that has developed over the past three decades, and both sides have many benefits to look forward to.
