US military aid enough for Ukraine to fight until 2025

(Dan Tri) - The administration of incumbent President Joe Biden believes that the military aid that Washington has transferred or is expected to transfer to Ukraine is enough for Kiev to fight until the end of next year.

During a press briefing, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller was asked how long Ukraine could resist Russia with the resources provided by the Biden administration.

Mr. Miller said the U.S. administration believes that the resources already provided to Ukraine, along with resources planned for Kiev at the end of Mr. Biden’s term, will give Ukraine enough weapons and equipment to continue the fight until the end of 2025.

Last week, in an interview with Spain's El Pais newspaper on December 11, Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko said he believed Kiev "has enough money and weapons to withstand at least until the first half of 2025," even if the US cuts aid.

"I believe we have enough funds, weapons, missiles and artillery shells to withstand at least until the first half of 2025. We will ensure that sufficient funds are allocated to purchase ammunition and necessary military equipment by 2025," he said.

He acknowledged that if the US cut off aid, it would be a serious challenge to Ukraine's defense capabilities, but not an inevitable collapse.

According to a report by the Pentagon Inspector General released on November 14, the US Congress has allocated nearly $183 billion to Ukraine since the conflict with Russia broke out in February 2022.

Of the total, about $131.36 billion was allocated for security-related activities. This includes $45.6 billion for increasing the U.S. military presence in Europe and nearly $46 billion for replacing weapons supplied to Ukraine. In addition, nearly $44 billion was allocated for administrative programs, including salaries for Ukrainian civil servants, and $4 billion for humanitarian aid.

Ukraine faces an uncertain future as President-elect Donald Trump has yet to make clear whether his administration will continue to provide aid to Ukraine and, if so, at what level.

During the election campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly criticized the US for pouring billions of dollars in aid into Ukraine. He announced that he would consider cutting aid or providing aid to Kiev in the form of loans when he returned to the White House.

Ukraine has repeatedly warned that it will lose to Russia if the US cuts aid, while Mr. Trump asserted that Washington will not "abandon" Ukraine.
