On July 27, according to news from Bai Chay Hospital, at the hospital's Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology Department, doctors had just received a female patient with acute hepatitis after taking herbal medicine to treat her stomach.
Specifically, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoan, Deputy Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, diagnosed the patient with acute hepatitis due to self-medication with traditional medicine to treat stomach disease. If not treated promptly, it could cause complications such as liver and kidney failure, blood clotting disorders, and death.

Tests showed that the woman's liver enzyme index was much higher than normal. Specifically, the AST index, reflecting liver cell damage, increased to 527 U/L (normally 5-40 U/L). The ALT index, assessing liver damage, increased to 505 U/L (normally below 50 U/L).
Currently, the patient is being treated at the hospital with liver cell support drugs and infusions to increase detoxification. The patient's health is stable and continues to be monitored.
From the above case, Dr. Ngoan warned people that using herbal medicine of unknown origin is very dangerous. When entering the body, the medicine is eliminated through the liver and kidneys. If the medicine unfortunately contains toxic ingredients, it will damage the liver and kidneys.
The doctor said that if a patient wants to use traditional medicine, they should see a traditional medicine specialist who has been properly trained. In addition, the herbal medicines at the hospital all have clear origins, the quality of the medicine is guaranteed in terms of color, ingredients, and prescriptions suitable for each patient's condition. However, for patients with kidney failure, absolutely do not use traditional medicine to treat the disease because it will make the condition worse and difficult to treat.
