The term “black hole” refers to a region of space into which everything is sucked in and cannot escape. According to NASA, they are essentially super-dense masses of matter, compressed into an extremely small space. Although there is still much to be discovered about black holes, scientists have identified some of their terrifying properties.

YouTube content creator Zack D. Films created a simulation of a human falling into a black hole.

As you can imagine, falling into a black hole would be terrifying. “If you fall into a black hole, gravity will stretch your body apart in a process called spaghettification,” he says at the beginning of the video, which has been viewed more than 12 million times.

Specifically, if you get close to a black hole, the gravitational force at your feet will be stronger than the gravitational force at your head, thereby causing a stretching phenomenon in your body, making you feel like you are "longer" and "thinner".

As you cross the event horizon, time appears to slow down for distant observers. Conversely, for the person falling into the black hole, time continues to pass normally from their perspective.

Schnittman explained why he decided to make the video: “I get asked about this all the time. And simulating such complex processes helps me bring the abstract mathematical theories of relativity to life and closer to the reality of the universe."

“I created two contrasting scenarios. In the first scenario, the camera — representing a reckless astronaut — misses the event horizon and returns. In the second scenario, the camera crosses that boundary and disappears forever.”
