It's been five days since EURO 2024 kicked off in Germany last Friday and fans are starting to adapt, adjusting their routines to revolve around three matches taking place each day.
However, today, fans may be surprised to realize that there is no match starting at 14:00 local time (ie 20:00 Vietnam time).
Today there will be only 2 matches remaining in the first round of the group stage, a clear change in the schedule.
The first of two matches is scheduled to take place at 23:00 between Türkiye and Georgia, before Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal begin their EURO campaign against the Czech Republic at 02:00 on 19 June.
So what is the reason for the schedule change? You may be surprised to learn that it is nothing new and has been the norm for many years now.
Accordingly, since the tournament expanded from 16 to 24 teams in 2016, only two matches have been scheduled on the first Tuesday of the fixture list.
This is because there is currently only 1 match taking place on the opening day of the tournament.
Since there are 36 group stage matches and only 1 match on the first day, all other matches have to be rescheduled.
But by holding just two matches on the first Tuesday from the opening date, it resets the pattern so that there will be three matches again from Wednesday onwards.
Therefore, apart from tonight and tomorrow morning, the following days until the end of the group stage will have 3 matches per day.
