However, the Forbidden City has a strict rule that requires visitors to leave before 5 pm. After this time, the Forbidden City will close. It also never closes late or stays open all night. Why?
There are four theories about why the Forbidden City requires visitors to leave before 5 p.m.
First, the Forbidden City has too much negative energy. There are legends that the Forbidden City is the place where many crimes took place, the result of palace fights, many concubines, maids and eunuchs were killed. Many people even claim that at night in the Forbidden City, there is often strange music coming from the palaces.
Second, the Forbidden City has no guards. Another story about the Forbidden City is that after 5 pm, the gates are closed, making it impossible for anyone to enter or leave. Many dogs are trained to guard the area from dusk till dawn.

Third, regarding an incident that happened 64 years ago. On August 16, 1959, when the Forbidden City guards were on their routine patrol, they suddenly discovered something unusual. In the treasure display area, they found a broken window, and some of the antiques inside had disappeared. After checking, they found that a precious book belonging to one of Kangxi's empresses. In addition, there were engagement gifts and letters from Emperor Qianlong that had also disappeared.
The police investigated and caught the culprit through his fingerprints left at the scene. This person said that after visiting the Forbidden City, he suddenly had the idea of stealing something when he went to the antiques exhibition room. After that, this person was arrested.
Fourth, the deterioration of the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City has a total area of up to 720,000 m2 with more than 70 large and small palaces. In this palace system, there are up to 9,999 rooms. Some places have degraded and have not been repaired, so tourists entering without a tour guide can be dangerous. Therefore, to protect cultural relics and tourists, the Forbidden City has a regulation to close at 5 pm every day.
