Why didn't the box office of the movie "Finding the Body" explode?

(PLVN) - The horror film "Finding the Body: Headless Ghost" topped the Vietnamese box office, but its revenue did not explode due to poor script quality and incorrect message.

According to Box Office Vietnam (an independent box office statistics unit), “Finding the body: Headless Ghost” is the film that led the box office chart last week. During the last 3 days of the weekend, the film by director Bui Van Hai (Hai Bui) brought in more than 21.4 billion VND, with about 250 thousand tickets sold. On average, each screening sold about 32 tickets. The film's current revenue reached 33.5 billion VND.

However, this achievement shows that it is inferior to “Ma da” and “Quy nhap trang” - 2 works in the same “horror universe” built by producer Nhat Trung. After its release, the film received many mixed opinions related to the script, the humor and horror details lacking highlights.

The film follows the duo Tien (Tien Luat) and Thanh (Ngo Kien Huy). Both are assigned to transport a dismembered body to the hospital for autopsy. On the way, blood from the corpse suddenly splatters onto Tien's shirt.

He did not expect that this incident would push him and his senile mother (Hong Van) into tragedy. In the small house where the mother and daughter lived, many strange phenomena continuously occurred. At first, Tien did not pay any attention, but things became more and more serious, forcing him to explore the mystery.

According to the crew, the film is based on a real case that happened in 1987 at Bui Van Hai's own family. The director brought this story to the big screen with the desire to create horror films, but still full of humanity. However, his storytelling style made this message somewhat distorted.

Many viewers criticized the film for its tendency to “glorify” the perpetrator, blaming the victim when at the end, the film tried to emphasize that she was a pragmatic person, even too rude, so she was murdered. The fact that “Finding the Body” has a film with music and lyrics expressing gratitude for mother-child love also makes viewers feel confused.

In the cast, Tien Luat, Hong Van, Ngo Kien Huy stopped at the level of average roles, without any explosive moments. The rare bright spot of the film is the mother-daughter interaction between Tien Luat and Hong Van. Next week, "Finding the Body" will clash with many blockbuster works, so the film's revenue will most likely stagnate.

Coming in second last week was the film “Tunnel: The Sun in the Dark” with over 11.4 billion, bringing the film’s current total revenue to over 153 billion after 3 weeks in theaters. With over 2,000 screenings/day as it is now, along with the support and national pride on the occasion of April 30th-May 1st, the film will still be in theaters for a long time.

Coming in third at the Vietnamese box office is the movie “Marry a Ghost to Solve Your Bad Luck” – a remake of the hit Taiwanese (Chinese) movie “Marry My Dead Body”. The movie earned 5.9 billion VND in revenue over the weekend. The total revenue of the movie is now over 35.8 billion VND.

In addition, foreign films such as “Bribery”, “Kappa: Evil Spirit Under the Lake”, “Ghost Mother” have all been released but their box office revenue is not too impressive. This is considered a good condition for the two Vietnamese films “Tunnel” and “Finding Corpses” to increase their revenue, before the blockbuster duo - “Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang” by Ly Hai and “Detective Kien: Headless Case” by Victor Vu are officially released on the occasion of April 30 - May 1.

In addition, the Marvel blockbuster "Thunderbolts" will also be released to audiences this time, but the screenings are clearly showing that it is inferior to Vietnamese films.
