Why are iPhone 15 sales so poor in China?

To find an answer to the question, Business Insider recently conducted a survey about the iPhone 15 via the social network Weibo. With more than 100 million views, many consumers in China criticized this new product series as too poor.

There are various reasons why Chinese consumers are turning their backs on the iPhone 15.

Many people said they were not impressed that Apple took so long to switch to USB-C. They said it was not because Huawei was superior, but because Apple was inferior. For many people, upgrading to the iPhone 15 just to get USB-C is not worth it.

Some also argue that the iPhone 15 is too expensive, while it offers features that are almost identical to similar smartphones from Xiaomi, Oppo, and Huawei. According to them, everything else is worse besides Apple's software, while the iPhone costs much more. "Now, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo are just as good, if not better, than Apple," one user shared.

Speaking of Huawei, the company’s resurgence seems to have had a big impact on the decline in iPhone 15 sales. The Chinese company recently surprised the Western world by introducing the Mate 60 Pro, a flagship smartphone with its own 7nm chip and 5G connectivity. According to Counterpoint Research, the phone is doing very well in China and in just a few months since its launch, it has helped Huawei increase its sales by 37% year-on-year in the country. Meanwhile, Apple saw a double-digit decline in the third quarter of 2023 in China.

Huawei was the only company that threatened Apple in China before US sanctions crippled its ability to make high-end phones, so it's no surprise that Huawei's steady return is becoming a problem for Apple.

However, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro is not the only smartphone being compared to the iPhone 15. Some argue that this is not a compelling enough reason for users to upgrade from their well-serving phones. Instead, they argue that even the five-year-old Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro still works well. It doesn't freeze up and you don't need to carry a power bank when you go out.

In addition, many users are also disappointed that there are not many changes between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 15, even though both have the same screen refresh rate. Users shared: "There is not a big difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 15. The camera improvement is not big, the battery is similar. Charging takes a long time and the phone signal is poor. So there is no need to upgrade." They also said that "An iPhone is not cheap, and Apple has made huge profits from their iPhones. Buying an iPhone is basically giving cash to Americans."

In fact, while many believe that the iPhone 15 is one of the best smartphones available today and that the lack of enthusiasm among Chinese consumers may stem from nationalism, it is worth pointing out that Apple's latest phones have also been criticized by consumers in other parts of the world for similar reasons.

Apple has recently been caught in the crossfire of the US-China rivalry, with a report saying that Chinese government officials are no longer allowed to use iPhones. China will account for 18% of Apple's revenue by 2022. In the fourth quarter of 2022, the iPhone accounted for a quarter of smartphone sales in China.
