On September 26, the seminar "Solving copyright protection for the music - cinema - digital television industry" organized by the Vietnam Digital Content Creation Alliance shared a lot of information about the current situation of digital content copyright infringement in general, as well as the music, cinema and digital television industry in particular, and discussed the difficulties in applying solutions to prevent and stop copyright infringements.

In the context of the extremely vibrant digital content distribution, the rapid development of Over-The-Top (OTT) television platforms and online movie publishers has brought users to a completely new era of entertainment content consumption. The convenience of accessing movies, TV shows and live music events directly on devices has transformed the way audiences interact with content. However, this digital revolution also brings unprecedented challenges in content security and copyright protection, requiring the emergence of new solutions to protect content from a series of copyright infringement risks.

According to Mr. Vu Kiem Van, Vice President - General Secretary of Vietnam Digital Communications Association, he also emphasized the challenges in content copyright issues in the context of digital transformation at this time.

Sharing this opinion, at the seminar, Mr. Pham Hoang Hai - Director of the Digital Content Copyright Center, Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that copyright infringement in Vietnam is very complicated, with a series of copyright-infringing websites (illegal websites) broadcasting football tournaments as well as movies.

“In particular, recently, it has been discovered that some pirated websites have switched to the form of Japanese Anime comics. The act of stealing and violating copyrights of comics has also received very strong reactions from the owners in Japan regarding copyright infringement in Vietnam,” Mr. Hai informed.

According to the leader of this Department, the common characteristics of many copyright-infringing websites are the use of international domain names and information hiding services; operating openly, constantly changing domain names when blocked. The units managing illegal websites often attach malicious advertisements, betting, and gambling on these pages.

Giving more specific evidence, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Han - General Director of Thu Do Multimedia Company said that in Vietnam, up to 80% of copyright infringement occurs on digital platforms, causing Vietnam to lose 348 million USD in 2022, equivalent to about 7,000 billion VND.

“Copyright infringement in Vietnam is currently like a maze. In previous years, copyright infringement was simply copying the set-top box with the type of set-top box television, but now, the form of infringement has become more sophisticated and complicated, with transnational infringements appearing,” Mr. Han shared.

At the discussion, many opinions also said that although domain name blocking measures have begun to be implemented in Vietnam; digital rights management solutions such as Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady have been deployed to prevent unauthorized access and distribution, current copyright protection solutions are still not enough to protect and a multi-dimensional approach is needed to address existing risks.

In particular, the problem that content providers face in digital rights management vulnerabilities is primarily the exploitation of packet spoofing to fool the authorization server and bypass the authentication of granting permission to retrieve content to untrusted accounts.

OTT TV providers and online publishers face a range of other risks that require comprehensive copyright protection solutions, such as the issue of using screen capture devices for playback or the issue of exploiting virtual private networks to circumvent geographical restrictions, allowing access to content from one country and distributing illegal content in another country...

In order to deal with these diverse threats, the delegates attending the discussion said that, along with management and operational policies, it is necessary to focus more on technology factors to provide a flexible and active defense mechanism, proactively detecting and reporting copyright infringement risks.
