The Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association (Aismoli) believes that the country has the potential to become one of the centers of the global electric motorcycle industry.
According to Mr. Abdullah Alwi, Chairman of Aismoli, this assessment is based on the current large scale of the domestic electric motorbike market. Accordingly, Indonesia will not only be a center for electric motorbike production, but also become an exporter of electric motorbike engines in the future. Mr. Alwi said: “So far, the production of electric motorbikes in Indonesia has reached 74,988 units/month, which is a significant increase. In 2020, this number was only a few hundred units/month.”
Meanwhile, economist Ahmad Heri Firdaus, who works at the Center for Industry, Trade and Investment at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), said that the rate of two-wheeled vehicle use in Indonesia is among the highest in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with an average of one motorbike for every four people. This means that the opportunity to switch to electric motorbikes in Indonesia is huge, in addition to the strategic nature of the market and the development of this industry. However, expert Firdaus also said that Indonesia is still facing a big challenge in implementing its commitment to achieve zero net emissions by 2060. To achieve this goal, one of the measures that needs to be taken is to convert gasoline-powered motorbikes to electric versions.
Although the use of electric motorbikes in Indonesia has increased significantly in recent years, it is still far from the government's target of 13.5 million electric motorbikes sold by 2030. Mr. Firdaus admitted: "There are still existing challenges, not only in terms of technical issues such as general infrastructure, but also in terms of public awareness. Many people are still skeptical about the power source, durability, or after-sales policies..." Chairman Aismoli called on both the Indonesian government and electric motorbike manufacturers to make stronger efforts to raise public awareness about electric motorbikes, thereby forming understanding and trust in this environmentally friendly product.
