Nguyen Xuan Son’s success suggests a new direction for Vietnamese football in strengthening the national team. In fact, the use of 100% naturalized players in Vietnamese clubs and teams has happened before, creating many debates. The viewpoint of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) up to now is still to focus on developing local resources and not to use naturalized players en masse.
"The trend of increasing the use of naturalized players is taking place strongly in both Europe and Asia, contributing to enhancing the strength of national teams. However, this is carefully considered, to ensure both preserving national identity and maximizing collective strength to aim for greater goals.
The use of naturalized players in the national team not only complies with FIFA regulations but is also based on the player's wishes and suitability with professional and cultural criteria," VFF's homepage quoted President Tran Quoc Tuan.
Nguyen Xuan Son had great success in his first tournament wearing the Vietnamese national team jersey.
At the AFF Cup 2024, the Vietnamese team won the championship with a great contribution from Nguyen Xuan Son. The striker born in 1997 only became a Vietnamese citizen in September last year and was only eligible to play for the team in December (according to FIFA's residency regulations). After only 4 matches, Xuan Son scored 7 goals and won the title of top scorer and best player of the tournament.
In addition to Xuan Son, a 100% naturalized player, the Vietnamese team also has a Vietnamese player from Europe returning to contribute to his homeland, Nguyen Filip. Compared to regional rivals, the Vietnamese team makes less use of foreign resources (including players with and without native origin).
The achievements of Vietnamese football in recent years have had a great impact on the youth training work that has been promoted since the previous period. VFF has always emphasized the development of youth football in the process of raising the level of the Vietnamese national team and building a sustainable football foundation.
VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan emphasized that "with strong investment efforts and the right strategy, Vietnamese youth football not only creates a solid foundation but also ensures stability and long-term development for the national team in the future."
