Accordingly, VFF and Mr. Kim Sang-sik (Korean nationality) have reached consensus and agreement on the contents related to the position of Head Coach of the Men's National Team and the Vietnam National U23 Team, in a 2-year contract (from May 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026).
After a period of urgently researching and reviewing candidate profiles, VFF has conducted meetings with potential candidates for the position of Head Coach of the Vietnam National Men's Team and U23 Team, including Mr. Kim Sang-sik.
In the spirit of cooperation, VFF and Mr. Kim Sang-sik discussed the development strategy of Vietnam national football teams and reached common agreements in a 2-year contract. Mr. Kim Sang-sik will take charge of the Vietnam National Men's Team and U23 Team to participate in football events and international tournaments from May 2024 to March 2026.
The first task for the new Korean head coach is to lead the Vietnam National Team to participate in the remaining two matches in the second qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Asia, respectively against the Philippines National Team at home on June 6, 2024 and against the Iraq National Team away on June 11, 2024 (early morning of June 12, 2024 Vietnam time).
Coach Kim Sang-sik will train with the Vietnam National Team during the FIFA Days in September, October and November 2024 to prepare for the Southeast Asian Championship - ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, taking place from November 23 to December 21, 2024, followed by the third qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup scheduled to start in March 2025.
For the Vietnam National U23 team, new head coach Kim Sang-sik will also be given the best conditions to prepare for the 2026 AFC U23 Qualifiers scheduled to take place in September 2025 and then the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand in December 2025.
Coach Kim Sang-sik is trusted and expected to work with the Vietnam National Team and the Vietnam National U23 Team to successfully achieve the goals set for Vietnamese football in the coming time. Mr. Kim Sang-sik also expressed his hope that with the cultural similarities and good relations between Vietnam and Korea, he will receive the encouragement of Vietnamese fans and the support of the press, thereby creating more motivation for him to confidently take on the responsibility of a head coach and achieve success in his new position, thereby contributing to the development of Vietnamese football.
The contract signing ceremony and announcement of the new head coach of the Vietnam National Men's Team and U23 Team will be held on May 6, 2024.
Information about Coach Kim Sang-Sik
– Born on December 17, 1976
– Was a member of the Korean national team that participated in the 2006 World Cup, and won third place in the 2000 and 2007 Asian Cups.
– Qualification: Professional football coach (Pro)-AFC/KFA.
– Professional coaching career:
* From 2013 to 2020: Assistant Head Coach of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Club in K-League 1. During this period, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Club won a total of 6 K-League 1 championships, 1 runner-up position, 1 National Cup title and 1 AFC Champions League championship.
* 2021: Mr. Kim Sang-sik took on the position of head coach of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors Club and soon made his mark by leading the club to win the K-League 1-2021 and the 2022 Korean National Cup.
Notably, in his first year as head coach, Mr. Kim Sang Sik won the title of "Best Coach of 2021" voted by the K-League.
