Starlink satellites can detect stealth aircraft

In addition to providing Internet access to citizens, Starlink satellites can also detect stealth aircraft. The researchers claim that Starlink satellites can detect the location of stealth aircraft. They even give the example of the F-22 fighter jet used by the North American armed forces.

To conduct this research, the scholars used a commercial drone. As Professor Yi Jianxin, who led this research, mentioned, the model chosen was the DJI Phantom 4 Pro because this drone has the same radar characteristics as the F-22.

In the study, they were able to detect the drone’s location by analyzing disturbances in the electromagnetic signals of Starlink satellites. These disturbances occur when DJI drones pass through them, which offers significant advantages in detecting small and stealthy targets.

The discovery also opens up a future where military researchers could create a very cheap Starlink antenna and use it at bases to track aircraft movements, the researchers said. This would also require custom signal processing software and “an undisclosed high-performance chip.”

The type of technology that Chinese researchers have come up with is not entirely new. In fact, it was used by Germany during World War II. Moreover, radio enthusiasts can detect moving objects simply by monitoring signal disruptions, a technique known as scattering.

Despite the conclusions revealed by this study, its effectiveness in combat situations is still questionable. Even if it is possible to detect the position of a fighter jet like the F-22 in flight, being able to fix the weapon at the speed of the aircraft is another challenge. Basically, it would not be easy to detect and shoot down such an aircraft when moving at high speed.
