Sanitation, disinfection, disease prevention for livestock

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Along with vaccination, spraying chemicals to disinfect the environment in livestock farming is considered an important measure to destroy pathogens, contributing to protecting livestock and improving production efficiency. In the first months of 2025, districts, towns and cities have simultaneously carried out general cleaning, disinfection and environmental detoxification to prevent and control livestock and poultry diseases (GSGC).

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has instructed localities to implement sanitation, disinfection, and decontamination at markets, slaughterhouses, gathering, collecting live GSGC and animal products, and GSGC breeding facilities at least once a week. At the same time, disinfect vehicles transporting animals and smuggled animal products that are seized; clean and spray disinfectant in animal confinement and holding areas immediately after each destruction.

As a locality where foot-and-mouth disease broke out in pigs in February, Thach Thanh district immediately carried out disinfection and sterilization with lime powder and special drugs. Pigs in Thach Binh, Thach Dinh, Thach Long, and Thach Son communes were 100% vaccinated. Veterinary staff carried out disinfection measures in livestock areas, barns, village roads, and alleys in villages with the disease once a day in the first week and once every two days in the following weeks; villages without the disease were disinfected once every two days with 240 liters of chemicals and 400 kg of lime powder.

In Hoang Hoa district, the spraying is carried out in a rolling manner, focusing on and prioritizing spraying in barn areas with a lot of GSGC. The District Agricultural Service Center provides chemicals, tools, etc. for communes and towns to proactively organize preventive spraying, while monitoring and urging farmers to proactively clean the environment, barns, disinfect by sprinkling lime powder, spraying disinfectants according to regulations, etc. Mr. Hoang Van Thiet - a chicken farmer in Hoang Thinh commune, said: "In February and March, when the weather changes seasons, the humidity is high, reducing the resistance of livestock, making it easy for diseases to arise. I proactively buy disinfectants to spray the entire barn once a week; at the same time, I regularly sweep, collect waste, clear bushes, and regularly sprinkle lime powder on the walkways and around the barns."

It is known that since March 1, localities in the province have simultaneously implemented the "Month of general cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of the environment to prevent and combat the GSGC epidemic" phase 1/2025. Implementing cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization simultaneously will be the optimal measure to greatly limit the outbreak of diseases in the GSGC herd. However, people also need to pay attention to cleaning the barns and surrounding areas before spraying to achieve high efficiency.
