The waters of Quang Ninh province, particularly Ha Long Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and the Co To archipelago, have been surveyed and explored for many years by scientists from the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology). They have highly praised the richness of the coral reefs and the thriving fish populations associated with them. These areas contain rare species listed in the Vietnamese Red Book. Of particular note is the highly developed coral reef in the Hong Van area (Co To), which once stretched for 3-4 km in length and up to 1 km in width.
Affected by both natural and human factors, many coral reefs in the waters of Quang Ninh province have suffered significant degradation in recent years. Fortunately, recent surveys have confirmed that many coral reefs are in the process of recovery, with numerous small coral colonies thriving.
