(BDO) To celebrate the 48th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2023), the Youth Union of the Agencies - Enterprises (CQ-DN) of Binh Duong province organized the journey "I love my Fatherland" in Con Dao district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. This place marks the heroic history of the indomitable struggle of patriots. Through the journey, it has contributed to educating the sacred love of the Fatherland for the young generation.
The delegation visited, presented gifts and listened to stories about the revolutionary activities of former political prisoner Nguyen Thi Ni.
Meet the former female political prisoner
During the historic days of April, the Provincial Party Committee and Business Delegation chose Con Dao as a stop to organize the journey "I love my Fatherland" - the sacred land where Hang Duong Cemetery buried thousands of soldiers who died for national independence; the resting place of Vo Thi Sau - the national heroine.
During this trip, the Youth Union also organized a meaningful meeting of the Young Theory Club with the theme “Patriotic Education” at the home of former female political prisoner of Con Dao Nguyen Thi Ni. Ms. Nguyen Thi Ni, born in 1939, was detained in cell number 6, Phu Hai Camp since 1972. She was awarded the 45-year Party membership badge.
In the moments of intimate conversation, clasped hands, distant eyes recalling old stories, memories of the years of hardship flooded back, Mrs. Ni slowly told about her revolutionary activities. Born and raised in Tan Trung commune (Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province), in 1959-1960 she participated in the Dong Khoi movement in Ben Tre and Tien Giang. After that, she escaped to Saigon to become a special agent.
Group visits Con Dao Museum
In 1971, during a major enemy sweep, she was exposed and captured by the enemy in Go Cong. They imprisoned her in Thu Duc and Tam Hiep camps. Consistently, she did not reveal anything about her revolutionary base. All the enemy's blows could not get anything out of this steadfast woman.
Then they took her to Con Dao in an attempt to crush the prisoners’ will and courage with brutal beatings and torture. For the prisoners in Con Dao, the memory of “hell on earth” is always an indispensable part of their lives. Because of her great love for her fallen comrades, after the South was completely liberated and the country was unified, Ms. Ni returned to this place. She was also the only former female prisoner in Con Dao who volunteered to return to “stick to the island”.
Mr. Nguyen Gia Bao, a cadre of the Youth Union of the provincial government and enterprises, shared: Through the story of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ni, the members of the delegation had a very meaningful political study session. Hearing how the uncle and aunt studied politics together in prison helped the members understand more deeply and fully the importance of political study for young communists.
At the same time, this helps youth union members realize the historical value of the nation and the contributions of heroes and martyrs who died for the independence of the nation and the country, educate revolutionary ideals, and raise their sense of responsibility in building and defending the Fatherland in the new situation.
Education of patriotism and desire to contribute
During the trip, the delegation also visited Con Dao Museum, where artifacts were displayed and listened to explanations about the meaning and stories behind the historical artifacts. This is a place that preserves the ups and downs of time, the pain of communist prisoners, and the determination to fight, loyalty to the Party, to Uncle Ho, and loyalty to the victory of the revolution.
The delegation also visited famous historical sites, including Pier 914. This is a sacred historical site. At the memorial, the delegation burned incense to remember and express gratitude to the soldiers who fell at this place.
Con Dao, also known by many other names such as Con Son, Con Lon... is an archipelago off the coast of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. On February 1, 1862, Bonnard signed a decision to establish Con Dao Prison, a place to detain Vietnamese political prisoners, using the famous tiger cage system. Under the brutal regime of the prison, about 20,000 Vietnamese people died and were buried in Hang Duong Cemetery. Because of that harshness, Con Dao was once known as hell on earth. In 1977, the National Assembly met and decided to officially name it Con Dao, a district-level administrative unit under Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. |
The name 914 was given to this place to commemorate the 914 patriots who sacrificed their lives during the construction of the pier. They were tortured and abused in prison. The prisoners here still had to cross the dangerous rocky mountain road, carrying on their emaciated shoulders heavy blocks of stone carved by hand.
Many people fell down from exhaustion and the enemy's cruel whips. The scattered stones at the foot of the pier are evidence of the inhumane crimes of the French colonialists in the past.
Mr. Bien Tuan Vu, Secretary of the Youth Union of the provincial agencies and enterprises, said that Con Dao Prison is also a "communist school" that trains the qualities and will of communist soldiers on the prison front, and at the same time is a place to educate the tradition of heroic struggle, patriotism, and indomitable spirit of previous generations of revolutionary activists for the young generation today and tomorrow.
Learning from the examples of our predecessors with all gratitude and respect, we hope to contribute to fostering love for our homeland and country, and the desire to contribute in each member of the Youth Union of the Government and Enterprises, and to encourage the spirit of volunteering to contribute ideas and initiatives for "Binh Duong Aspiration 2030".
Mr. Vu added that in recent times, the Youth Union has urged provincial agencies and enterprises and Youth Union units in the bloc to effectively implement the model of "Traditional education journey" for youth union members. Through trips to historical sites, exchanges with heroic Vietnamese mothers, former youth volunteers, and families with meritorious services to the revolution, it has effectively contributed to the innovation of content and methods of implementing revolutionary ideal education and tradition education of the Youth Union, attracting a large number of youth union members to participate.
The stories and practical lessons through each journey have helped each youth union member deeply perceive the invaluable historical lessons. That is, national independence is priceless, sacred, and inviolable. They are aware of their responsibility as the next generation and spread the spirit of love for their homeland, country, and national pride in their Youth Union base.
“Through the journey, the Youth Union of the Provincial Agencies and Enterprises hopes to pass on the flame of enthusiasm, enthusiasm for working and studying to build the country in today's young generation. Each Youth Union officer has been and is making worthy contributions to the glorious responsibility of the Youth Union organization, holding the red flag with the yellow star, moving forward. With faith, will, and aspiration to contribute, each Youth Union officer should live the most beautiful days.”
(Mr. Bien Tuan Vu, Secretary of the Youth Union of Provincial Agencies and Enterprises)
