Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí06/08/2024

(Dan Tri) - Filipino athlete EJ Obiena unfortunately lost a prestigious medal in athletics due to a loss in the secondary index.
In the final round of the men's pole vault in athletics, which took place this morning (August 6, Vietnam time), athlete Obiena jumped over the 5m90 bar.

Obiena had the same result as Emmanouil Karalis (Greece). However, the Filipino athlete lost the bronze medal to his opponent due to a lower secondary index. Specifically, EJ Obiena took more jumps than his opponent to conquer the above mentioned bar. That made it impossible for him to win the Olympic bronze medal, even though he was very close to this prestigious medal.

Athletics is the sport known as the "queen", the most attractive, basic and prestigious competition of the Olympic movement. Winning a medal in athletics is much more difficult for Southeast Asian athletes than winning medals in badminton, boxing, taekwondo, table tennis, weightlifting, etc. Because in athletics there are no weight classes, there are no light weight classes for Southeast Asian athletes to aim for, avoiding big and strong athletes with muscle advantages from the West. Therefore, not many Southeast Asian athletes have won medals in athletics in the history of the Olympics. The gold medalist in the men's pole vault this morning was Armand Duplantis (Sweden) with a score of 6m25. The silver medalist was Sam Kendricks (USA), with a score of 5m95.
