Nguyen Thi Huong was born in 2001, from Vinh Phuc. She has been involved in sports since she was a middle school student, starting with freestyle wrestling. Nguyen Thi Huong switched to canoeing since 2016.
Nguyen Thi Huong's record includes 5 gold medals at the 31st SEA Games. She won first place in the 200m, 500m, and 1,000m single sculls. In addition, the 2000-born athlete was also part of the 4-person sculls team that won gold medals in the 500m and 1,000m.
At the 32nd SEA Games, the organizing committee did not include canoeing in the competition system even though it is an Olympic sport. Nguyen Thi Huong still participated but competed in the traditional rowing team and with her teammates won 3 gold medals.
In April 2024, Nguyen Thi Huong finished second at the Asian Speed Canoe Championship - which is also the qualifying round for the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was only 0.2 seconds slower than the first place athlete from Uzbekistan.
Athlete Nguyen Thi Huong
This achievement helped the female athlete from Vinh Phuc earn a place at the Olympics. Before Nguyen Thi Huong, no Vietnamese canoeist had ever qualified for the Olympics.
At the world’s highest level, Nguyen Thi Huong could not create any surprises. She ranked 14th out of 23 athletes in the quarterfinals. However, her time of 49.09 seconds was still better than the 49.351 seconds she achieved in the qualifying round.
At the end of 2024, Nguyen Thi Huong submitted a request to quit her local training. She said she had not received her medal bonus for the past 3 years and her nutritional support for 2024 from the Vinh Phuc Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center.
In addition to Nguyen Thi Huong, many other athletes from Vinh Phuc have also temporarily stopped working. The reason is that the Vinh Phuc Provincial Sports Training and Competition Center has temporarily stopped training for a number of sports teams due to financial problems.
Nguyen Thi Huong can join other units. Besides, she is still a national player. The training and competition regime of the female athlete born in 2001 at the national team level is still guaranteed.
"It is very unfortunate that athlete Huong is facing difficulties in her locality. However, Huong is still a member of the Vietnamese rowing team. All training and competition activities as well as her regime in the team will still be guaranteed," Mr. Nguyen Hai Duong, General Secretary of the Vietnam Rowing Federation, told VOV.
