In an interview with Kitco News, James Stanley, senior strategist at Forex, said that gold prices fell due to oversold conditions. He said that $2,500 an ounce is an important psychological level.

While $2,400 an ounce is a near-term boundary, Stanley said gold would need to break the $2,300 an ounce support level to weaken bullish sentiment in the market.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the market sees a more than 90% chance of a rate cut by the end of the summer. Gold's rally to a new record high coincides with expectations that the Fed will begin its easing cycle in September.

Analysts at CPM Group recommend investors stay on the sidelines next week, warning that the $92.7 drop over the past two days is likely to be repeated in the coming days or weeks, not just on the downside but also on the upside.

Despite Friday's sharp drop in gold prices, it will not affect the appeal of gold in the medium term, said Bob Haberkorn, senior commodities broker at RJO Futures.
