Tourism promotion literature

Promoting tourism through literature is not a new form, but according to experts, there is still a lot of room for exploitation, especially in the digital age. A tour following the journey of characters in famous novels or poems, from which visitors can not only visit but also experience culture and history more deeply... is completely possible.

Travel Guide

Many experts have stated that literature is not only an art of language but also an effective channel for cultural and tourism communication. Places mentioned in literary works can become attractive destinations thanks to the emotional elements, cultural depth and accompanying stories. Therefore, literature has the power to urge readers to “pack up and go” to experience with their own eyes the things that have been suggested in the pages of the book.

Works such as “Mat Biec”, “Dao Mong Mo”… by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh not only tell gentle, profound stories but are also associated with dreamy lands… In particular, through these stories, visitors can touch the depth of culture, psychology and regional identity - something that no ordinary travel guide can fully convey.

Or read “Homeland Mist” by Nguyen Ngoc Tu, which evokes for us the image of the Southwest region through rich imagery, rustic yet profound Western qualities. The work evokes emotions of exploring the river region, the affectionate people, suitable for community and ecological tourism.

Many poets have vividly depicted the beauty of each land, stirring in people's hearts the desire to set foot there, explore and experience. As in the poem "Returning to the Xoe dance" by poet Khuc Hong Thien, through each soulful sentence, he recreated the bustling, joyful atmosphere of the Xoe festival - a unique cultural feature of the Thai ethnic community in the Northwest mountains and forests.

Besides, there are many other poems that also contribute to opening up new lands, lighting up tourism potential through the emotional perspective of the artist.

As someone who travels a lot and writes a lot about localities, writer Nguyen Van Hoc believes that literature is considered an effective way to promote images. If we know how to adapt and retell literary works associated with places, we can create unique cultural tourism products that attract domestic and foreign tourists.

Regarding the potential of promoting tourism through literary works, Mr. Pham Hai Quynh - Director of the Asian Tourism Development Institute, said that literature is one of the most powerful ways to convey emotions and cultural values. For example, tours following the journeys of characters in famous novels or poems, from which tourists can not only visit but also experience culture and history more deeply.

When tourists read and feel literary works, they will form a connection with that place. “Literature conveys the values, philosophies and lifestyles typical of the Vietnamese people. This helps tourists better understand the culture, people and history of Vietnam. Thus, adapting and retelling literary works associated with places is a potential direction and needs to be exploited more strongly in the future,” said Mr. Quynh.

To give literature another life

It can be said that if each written page is nurtured with love and empathy for the land, history and landscape of that place, it itself becomes an attractive and sincere invitation to travel.

Sharing about this, writer Phung Thien said that literature is not promoted in the mass media style, but chooses a quiet but profound way of promotion. Space, customs, culture, local language... are recreated through each work. Thanks to that, the lands appear vividly in the reader's mind, arousing curiosity, love and the desire to set foot there and experience it directly.

Mr. Pham Hai Quynh said that by integrating literary elements into tourism promotion activities, we not only bring tourists interesting experiences but also convey the rich cultural values of Vietnam.

According to Mr. Quynh, in order for literature to become a part of the modern tourism communication strategy, especially to attract young people, we need to use social networks and online platforms to share literary works associated with locations through articles, short videos, and attractive images. Create livestream programs or podcasts about famous literary stories that have taken place and are taking place at tourist destinations. Organize literary tours, including visiting locations mentioned in famous works.

Along with that, encourage authors to write about their travel experiences and promote them through media channels. Publish travel books related to literature, providing tourists with an insight into local culture and history. Organize literary festivals at tourist destinations, combined with exchange and sharing activities between authors and tourists. Create rich activities such as readings, literary seminars, or discussions about literary works at famous destinations.

According to writer Nguyen Van Hoc, for literature - especially works with cultural depth - to become a part of the modern tourism communication strategy, in order to create attraction for tourists, first of all, the work must be good, evoking the stature and cultural depth of Vietnam in general, and of each land and place in particular. This lies in the talent of the writer. Writers and creators must love Vietnamese culture, love the lands in order to be able to bring the images and beauty of the landscapes and lands into their works.

Next, we need the “green eyes” of filmmakers and screenwriters. Because they are the bridge for literary works to live another life, which is film. Next, localities also need to develop strategies to invite and attract filmmakers to film, creating large, professional film studios. It can be said that from literary works to stories of cultivating and spreading cultural values, developing tourism is a process, requiring the efforts of many people, at many levels, and in many sectors.
