On the afternoon of April 18, in Hanoi, the National Scientific Conference on 50 years of Vietnamese literature and arts (VHNT) after the National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) - Issues and development orientations took place.
The workshop was organized by the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, and the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations.
Speaking at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac - Permanent Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics - affirmed that, fully aware of the special position and role of literature and arts in the revolutionary cause of the nation and people, the Communist Party of Vietnam always pays attention to this important field.
Party documents through congresses have emphasized the great role of literature and arts in building new people, nurturing the soul, personality, social ethics, and arousing the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac, looking back over the past 50 years, it can be seen that the country's literature and arts have worthily inherited the tradition of a "patriotic and humane literature and arts, closely connected with the people and nation"; at the same time, with the strong support from the idea of innovation, literature and arts have strived to rise up, develop comprehensively, reflect and contribute to realizing the aspiration for national development.
However, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac frankly admitted that contemporary literature and art still lacks works of high ideological and artistic value, commensurate with the stature of the renovation initiated and led by our Party and the cultural and historical depth of the nation.
"A part of the creations are still far from reality, following easy tastes, leaning towards commerce and entertainment, lacking political and ideological courage. Besides, there is a clear generation gap among the current artists. The generation of artists who have created works before, with rich life experiences and deep thoughts, are gradually retreating into the background due to age and health.
Meanwhile, the young force, although dynamic, creative, and quick to approach new things, lacks depth of experience and solid value orientation," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac frankly said.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac said that in the wave of globalization and technology explosion, Vietnamese culture and arts are facing multi-dimensional impacts, which are both opportunities to expand exchanges, absorb the quintessence of human culture, integrate into international culture, and also a great challenge in preserving identity.
"The problem is to actively exploit the cultural values of ethnic groups and regions in creation; at the same time, proactively and selectively absorb the quintessence of world literature and art, contributing to creating new values that are both international in scope and imbued with the national soul...", the Permanent Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics expressed.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky - Vice Chairman of the Central Council of Theory and Head of the Department of Theory and Criticism of Literature and Arts - said that the country's artistic activities need to be more proactive and have stronger connections (Photo: Nguyen Hoa).
Sharing at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen The Ky - Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and Head of the Department of Literature and Art Theory and Criticism - said that in the period after 1975, literature and art were affected by the "multi-dimensional" impact of the political, economic and social context.
The harmony and sharing between revolutionary literature and progressive literature, with national and democratic spirit; the blending between peacetime and wartime; between the centralized, bureaucratic, subsidized economic mechanism and the market economic mechanism; between the old, the familiar and the new, the different... makes it difficult for literary and artistic creators to avoid surprise, confusion and even excitement before the new, rich things, including the complex aspects of social life.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen The Ky, in the era of information technology explosion and the development of artificial intelligence, the country's cultural and artistic activities need to proactively transfer generations and strongly link industries to meet the needs of the audience and carry out the tasks of this very important and particularly delicate field.
At the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son - Full-time member of the Committee for Culture and Society - said that the policy for developing culture and arts in Vietnam has made many important steps forward, but there are still significant limitations and challenges such as: Investment resources for culture and arts are limited; copyright protection policies are not really effective; the culture and arts management mechanism is still lacking in flexibility.
These shortcomings not only affect the development of the arts and culture industry but also reduce the spread of Vietnamese cultural values domestically and internationally.
According to Mr. Bui Hoai Son, it is necessary to increase investment and innovate funding mechanisms for literature and arts, perfect the legal system on copyright and copyright protection, and innovate the management mechanism in a more flexible and open direction towards creativity.
At the same time, promote cultural industry and apply digital technology in culture and arts.
Concluding the workshop, Politburo member, Party Central Committee Secretary, Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Nguyen Trong Nghia said that the Organizing Committee had received 138 presentations from scientists, experts, researchers, leaders and managers in the fields of culture, arts and literature in central and local agencies.
The workshop analyzed and evaluated the current situation, affirmed the achieved results; at the same time pointed out the limitations, inadequacies and issues facing Vietnamese literature and arts over the past 50 years.
From the results of the workshop, comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia requested all levels, sectors, localities, agencies, units, teams of researchers, theorists, critics and artists nationwide to continue to pay attention and synchronously implement the proposed tasks and solutions.
According to comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia, the team of artists and cultural and artistic activists should stick closer to and immerse themselves in the vivid reality of the country, promote social responsibility and civic duty, explore and create, constantly expand the scope and depth of capturing reality; deeply explain and interpret new and important issues, and strive to create more attractive works, profound in ideological content and new in form.

At the same time, promote propaganda and further raise awareness of the important position and role of literature and art, thereby promoting a sense of responsibility, making appropriate decisions, and motivating artists to be creative and dedicated.
"The organizing committee and press and media agencies continue to promote and widely disseminate the achievements of 50 years of Vietnamese literature and arts after the country's reunification in many rich, vivid and modern forms.
Introducing to the public typical and outstanding literary and artistic works of the past 50 years, contributing to strongly arousing the spirit of independence, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-reliance, national pride, bringing our country firmly into a new era", comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia emphasized after the workshop.
